I've just watched the first episode of Top Gear (new series) on the iplayer :)

I'm no techy whizz, I paid for a programme to hide my ip, I think the website address is www.hide-my-ip.com and then I select a UK IP address and Voila ! I can watch iPlayer and ITV Player, I'm all up to date on my Corrie, Eastenders, X Factor, I'm A Celeb, Spooks... God I think I might watch too much tele.... Aussie tele just doesn't do it for me! :p

Other people download from www.thebox.biz or www.UKnova.com but I'm not into file sharing and I get scared that downloading will zap all my internet (probably unjustified!) so I stream the programmes and with our telstra package there's no buffering and I bought a lead that plugs into my laptop and into my TV so I can watch the iPlayer and things on the TV

Streaming will zap your bandwidth too, you still download the video, you just watch it there and then. Downloading will allow you to watch it more than once without having to download it again.

I dont know what you mean by 'no buffering' as the player is generally the thing that does the buffering.

Is that just a one off payment?

Does it suffer from stopping and starting all the time while your watching it unless you have a great internet connection?

I watch most things most nights and haven't used up my internet yet (been doing it for about 6 months now) we're on a 25gig package thing with Telstra. So far so good!

The buffering thing was when we were on a smaller package the stream would stop/start all the time but we went up to the next size package and it works great now.

A HDMI cable, we got one from CD Wow for $30, I think you can get them cheaper off the net though :)

It's an annual fee, I think of it as my TV licence!! It doesn't stop/start either, it streams seamlessly... I wouldn't be able to watch it if it stuttered, it'd drive me up the wall! :)

I use whatsonthebox.net that hides my ip but I have had problems with shows loading. See my thread asking for computer help below.

I have also used the box which was pretty good although I have found that bit torrent is much quicker than u torrent. Bit torrent takes about 40 minutes to download an hour of x factor or I'm a celeb but u torrent took hours and I mean hours!

Or don't bother with any VPNs, Proxy packages, downloads and just use www.filmon.com - which is still free for the time-being and does, for the most part, work flawlessly.

What speed internet connection do you have, ADSL, ADSL 2, 2+, Naked etc etc.

So how much is the annual fee then?

Ooh I don't know... It's ADSL, I don't think its 2, 1500 something or other rings a bell but I'm not sure what it refers to! It was a standard home phone/internet thing with Telstra.

It was about $30 USD a year I think :)

Well worth it in my opinion, it has been used daily since April.

You'll need to check what outputs you have on your computer and TV. Modern LCD/Plasma screens should have a HDMI and/or VGA input, your computer will also depend on how old it is :)

I personally wouldn't use any kind of torrent as its generally too slow for me.

Its www.thebox.bz (belize domain I think). Excellent for UK TV progs, and super fast, a 1 hour Top Gear downloads in about 7 minutes.

For US programmes (well, House and 24 and Mythbusters for me), I use www.eztv.it. Not as fast as thebox, but fast enough.

Then just plug a netbook with a vga cable into the tv. No stuttering or stopping. And you can watch them repeatedly, burn them to DVD whatever.

I suppose its horses for courses, streaming would be fine for something like Corrie, I mean you wouldn't watch it more than once. But something like HIGNY or Mythbusters, you probably would want to view again.

Depends entirely on your quota. You say you're on wireless, so I'd tread carefully because telcos like Telstra crucify you if you go over quota.

I found the opposite. VPN slowed the connection down too much to stream the show. 1 hour show was taking 2 hours to download from the BBC or 30 minutes from a torrent. I've stopped paying the VPN subscription in favour of the free torrents.

VPN only needs to be active at the start of the download. Set it going and then turn off the VPN and you'll get full speed.

Yeah, I managed to get that to work a few times, but my wireless was flakey and when it reconnected, it complained. I should have tried on the linux box with a download manager...

I never stream'd much anyway, mostly set a few things off downloading then watch at my leisure during the week.

Yeah, thats because you'll be pulling the content from a local torrent user (torrents are peer-to-peer, although you probably already know that :) ), and not from across the other side of the world. Its all well and good until the other users start restricting their upload bandwidth. I always found p2p stuff frustrating.

My main beef at the moment is that even though peer-to-peer is legal, the big companies/isps deem it to be illegal, and are on the lookout for p2p users. They are more likely to shoot first and ask questions later when you're broadcasting to the world all the downloaded music/movies/games you have. Where as an SSL enabled http/nntp download tends to stay under the radar.

YMMV though.

While we're on the subject of wirelss and all that. I just put a wireless USB dongle on my Desktop, instead of connecting directly via the cable.

But it turns out, my Motorola Modem or Bigpond don't like the laptop and the desktop connecting to it wirelessly at the same time. Whats that about.

We've also got a netbook, and thinking back it used to say every five minutes that it had found the wireless network, so obviously it was getting kicked of every 5 minutes too.

Is this serious? Does the bigpond motorola wireless modem only handle 1 wireless connection?

Yes mate. It's free at the moment (with some pay-per-view channels) but they're sure to start charging at some point - so enjoy it while you can. ;)

Just downloaded hide-my-ip.com and is allowing me to acccess bbc iplayer. I am unable to watch the programmes as it keeps on buffering every couple of seconds, I have tried to download the programmes but it says they are only available to people in the UK. My new IP address is a UK one so I don't understand why it does not work.

You've just hit on why I never recommended it myself in the past. But in answer to your question I guess you wait until the HideMyIP people introduce a new UK server for you to connect to and then hope that the BBC don't detect it too quickly.

Speaking for myself I don't use any of them these days, but I note that uktvaccess is a VPN service like many others and as such as every bit as susceptible to IP range blocking as HideMyIP. Only reason many of these VPN companies manage to hang on to their IP range for so long is because they're tiddly companies that don't generate that much traffic. ;)

Updated to add - ROFL @ their FAQ, "We do not endorse the use of this service for any activities illegal under UK law or the law of the country you are resident in." This despite their home page which is one big advert for circumventing British copyright law.

Just re-register at TheBox with a new email address. All that bollocks they spout about monitoring to stop multiple accounts is patently bullshit because I've got three, which I make use of on the rare occaisons when stuff isn't available anywhere else. :D
