So anyway, about bathrooms.

One thing that is very important is to have your shower waterproofed by a company called wetseal. They essentially use liquid fibreglass and guarantee their work for 7 years.

We are using our next door neighbour. He's been fitting bathrooms for 20 years so we're pleased to have him so handy. Will go look at Wetseal and talk to him about them. Thanks for the advice

I speak on a course for owner builders here in Melbourne as an experienced owner builder. Here is a picture of our ensuite shower when it had just been wetsealed and after it had been finished. Anyone can do waterproofing but the last thing you want is a leak so its worth spending money on a reputable company with a proper guarantee.

I hear you. Your pics are great. You've been in the house for quite a while now - what's next?

I wanted to reno my bathroom and separate toilet by knocking them into one. Was quoted $35k !!!

Needless to say we will be living with the tiny blue toilet and shabby cracked bathroom for a few more years.

35K. Seriously Caroline, you could do a kitchen for just a bit more, that's horrific. I've costed out the kit I want just waiting on the labour costs to come in, if it's near 35k then it ain't happening lol. I can give you the name of the guy we're using if you are still thinking of doing yours.

It really depends on how much moving around of plumbing / knocking down & building walls is required. We compromised on our original plan which involved moving things around to cut down on the cost. 35k does sound excessive mind you.

We thought it was excessive. Our neighbours are tradies- carpenters and have offered to help, but it will still cost $20k or thereabouts. Was a real shock to discover just how many regulations there are- not like a UK reno where you can do the whole thing for £5k to a decent standard.
I'd never be a candidate for The Block!!

We are looking at about $10k for ours. Ours is the family bathroom and it isn't a huge room and all our plumbing is staying roughly in the same place. We bought the bath yesterday, $550. Tiling is going to be our biggest expense I think, just waiting on the quote now. Don't get one of those companies in as they charge the earth. Source the tradies yourself. We are using these guys for our vanity http://showerama.com.au/ their stuff is available in most bathroom shops. Good luck.

That still sounds high. I'm hoping to keep ours under $14 (well under lol). I'm like Carole, not moving too much but will be swapping the bath and vanity around. We've decided to leave the WC and bathroom seperate to keep the cost down.
