For example, do you need to disclose it when you apply for a mortgage etc?

You'll be asked the question and if you answer no then you are comitting fraud. They would be very unlikely to run credit checks on you in the UK but its fraudulent none the less.

Not really so weird. I couldnt get one for about 2 years when I first moved to the UK...nor could I get a bank account that was more than just purely a savings account. I wasnt allowed direct debits or anything for about 18 months after I started working in the UK....

How odd... I had no problem here getting all sorts of stuff done with my Westpac account... Several direct debits for Foxtel/Internet, etc... But get the Nth degree if I even look at a monthly mobile contract... :confused:
