This is interesting, as I have evaluated our situation in a similar manner. I cannot think of anywhere in England (where I would consider living), that could offer what we have here - in terms of countryside (inc national park), great beaches, city, community, diversity (suburbs/villages/people), arts/festivals, sports - the list goes on!
I can think of a few locations that might just meet it (naturally allowing for differences in country - god dammit afterall!) but a lot more money is required and frankly, we like it here so it's really academic.

It was partly an exercise in comparing and contrasting Australia with UK as objectively as I could. And parts of London/the UK were without peer in terms of these problems people complain about - others weren't, hence my emphasis on area, not nation.
A little rotundness is not an issue. But an area where a high proportion is obese, along with a myriad of other factors (etc) will I bet ya be more ''feral'' than an area where everyone is decidedly not.

Totally agree with you! Not that I've been back since we arrived, but I remember it well. When I arrived here, I kept asking if it was OK to bring children in (pub etc) and they looked at me as if I was mad

Many pubs are legally bound NOT to allow kids in but they are often welcome in the beer gardens.
Prior to the smoking ban last year I would not have dreamed of taking kids in a pub anyway.

There were plenty of kids running around The Pilgrim here in Marchwood when I strolled down for a meal and over my local snooker club last night, the landlord, Mark, brought in his toddler 'Angel' and I noticed that even the most hardened of (male) punters were 'cooing' over her.

My 2 year old daughter sat on a stool at the bar of the hotel/pub we stayed at in Wales.
She got so many cordial drinks off the barstaff it wasn't funny!

I agree
Real Estate agents are to blame for all the ills in this World, they should all be whipped to within an inch of their lives.
Saying that though the one who sold us our house was really feral AKA fat

It was bizarre to escape to the local when my Mum was here - but I could get used to it
