Default Aussie Place Names

What were explorers thinking when they found 100 mile beach. Did they look at the surf, the rocks, the wildlife, their patrons, the sunset, and think, "nah, measure how long it is, and call it that"

Same goes for 80 mile beach.

And then for those explorers who did have a bit of imagination. Mount Hopeful? Lake disappointment? Come on, theres gotta be something better than that. How about "Mount Oh I might survive", and "Lake I'm f**ked, there was supposed to be water here."

'Emu' and 'Wombat' must have been hard ones to think of

Kangaroo Point must have been thought up after they ran out of names after Peel, Stradbroke, Wellington (Point), Brisbane, etc were all used up.

Of course dont forget where most of the early explorers (and place namers) came from

I've seen the Sunshine Coast referred to as the North Coast. So, the 20 million K's north of the North Coast is......

Point Danger makes me laugh too!

Down here in Vic we get the East Coast and West Coast even though it all points south and I think in NSW you get the North Coast and South Coast even though it all points East.

You get something similar in the UK. The middle bit of the UK is called The North and the bit above that is called The South (by the Scots).

If you live in Perth you could be unlucky enough to find yourself living in the suburb of 'Dogswamp' or 'Innaloo'

Beggars belief, but i'd love to find out the history behind these names

So named by Captain James Cook because of the dangerous shoals about 8km offshore. He also named Mt Warning.

You can also divide your South in two, too.

The "North" (anything further than the Watford Gap) populated by monkeys (gas lighting, cobbled streets) and the South populated by fairies (electric lighting, paved streets).

PS I actually visited the Watford Gap on my recent trip to the UK. It was the location of a staging area when we took a wrong turn after leaving B'Ham.

It is a lot further north than I thought it was. Times are changing.

I think you misread me. The South I mentioned is that above The North. In Scotland you see signs for The South but they mean the South of Scotland not South of the Border.

Right, you have to explain that. I'm sure its funny in your head, but what does that mean to normal people?

Now try explaining it in english.

I understand that everyone south of the border of QLD is called a Mexican, but it still doesn't explain your original remark

"Now you understand how big Mexico is"?

As Pauline Hanson would say..... Please explain?
