Just came across my Daughter watching some of her senior Media students work, from Northcote high school, on You Tube... I found it interesting because it sums up the Culture of Inner Melbourne in one hit... from the dress, the attitude, the capacity, the humour and the cultural mix. Which in these parts is very Mediterranean.... Or "wog city" as it is known by the local inhabitants. It could be very interesting to Teenagers that are migrating here.

I'd like to show my daughter some similar examples from the UK if there are any out there

I'm really curious as to whether the kids in the UK are encouraged to do Media studies that ends up with mini films like this ?

It's just that the seemingly informal education here, does produce workable viable results for kids.... Sometimes you read comparisons that point to the UK's more formal and measurable outcomes ?

It is a certainly very different style of education here in the UK. My (English) wife is head of drama at an inner city school, and one of her main gripes is the fact that British kids are "taught to the test."

This looks great on paper; they're doing masses of work, constantly being assessed and re-assessed, sitting endless exams, etc. so they must be getting a great education, right? Because we all know that more tests & more exams = superior education, right? And Australian schools don't have as much testing, so the Australian education system must be inferior, right?

Except that it doesn't quite work like that. At the end of the day, too many of the British kids have merely been taught to pass a test; they haven't actually learned what they've been studying. So they walk out of school with a set of very nice exam results, but not a great deal of genuine education.

Now the British government is trying to move in a different direction. Ironically, the system they're hoping to adopt is the same one that Scotland has been using since 1992.

I love watching utube short films and schools and the pupils are bringing out some superb stuff.
The kids today are really bringing out some fantastic media work all over the world, this is one of my favourites.

That is brilliant, again kids in similar situation! Laws wants to take media studies in grade 10 next year, only problem is there are 20 places and 384 kids in year 10 level. The competition to get a place in that course is almost impossibly high. I hope he gets in, the other one fought odds of double that for a academic place in the IB and won so heres hoping

Last year (or maybe the year before) I was in Melbourne Museum and they had a lot of the results from the school design courses. I was well impressed. I would have loved to have built an electronic bowling alley (scaled down but fully working) when I was in school.

Great clip, a great insight to teens in OZ im showing to my 15 yearold daughter as we speak/type.Well done lads, well talented.I dont think you'd find anything like this in uk schools or the health n saftey brigade will be out it would be a case of "no footy in school allowed,...someone will get hurt". Why say wog city I know the aussies use that term towards greeks italians etc but me for one find that word really not nice and not apporiate,must admit was quite a shock when I came to oz to hear that word so outdated,I just feel it wasnt nesscary to put that in your post regards z

I did give the word some consideration. always do with that word, the only reason I used it, is this part of Australia, is the home of mediteranean culture... It really is, this part of the Northern Suburbs of Melbourne, has the greatest concentration of people from that region across the whole of Aussie. They use that term to describe themselves and are fine about their Friends using it. I used it because in this region it is an acceptable term, plus I lived in this area for over 28 years now. One of the reasons I posted, was to show the great diversity in culture of the people in this region, which is one of the greatest strengths and draws to the Northern Subs of Melbourne.

I take your point, and doubt if I will use it on these boards again, however I bet I use it in its proper context at work amongst my workmates the majority of whom are from the mediteranean region, within a week.


Just thought of something as an edit... I think you will find Afrimche, and his peer group, will be astounded that the word "wog" is so offensive in the UK, as the term has been in such regular use by that cultural group to describe each other, for almost 3 generations now.

An offensive term to call that cultural Group here is "Muzza/s" Dont ever use that anyone from the UK....
