You get the drift.. if a word can be shortened to one syllable it will be - and even if it can't they will try and give it a shot!
It's just baby talk they haven't grown out of.

I enjoy the way well known phrases are completely mangled here. I can't think of any offhand, but I'll watch out for them and post them here.

Midriff has become midrift at least for rugby commentators.

If you called your fins - 'flippers' in the UK you would also be laughed at and asked to buy the instructors a round.

Fastest 20pounds I lost that first morning, too. The shame still lives with me.

No. THose are faintly amusing deviations. I'm thinking about the ones that are wrong because they don't understand the original derivation. I'll have to listen out to the ABC, they come up pretty regularly.

alfalfa's not watercress Alfalfa is alfalfa shoots, watercress is watercress.

I've never heard an Aussie use the word Doona, only expats. All the Aussies I know either say duvet or quilt.

My favourite is "bluey" for folks with red hair.
Virgin Blue uses this quirk with its red planes, logos etc

That's as much a UK phrase. There's actually very few words that if you use the UK version, isn't understood by Aussies and visa versa. Only thing that's caught me out was a parent wanting a windcheater for her son (school uniform shop). I showed her the trackie top and she got huffy and said she didn't want that. Finally sorted that she wanted a fleece jumper. Windcheater to me is a shower/wind proof jacket

Grouse = Good

That one still catches me out. Just feels like grouse should be used to describe something bad rather than something good.
