An arithmetic teaser

Re: An arithmetic teaser
So three builders decide they are going to buy a radio for $30 and put in $10 each. They send the apprentice to buy it, but when he gets to the shop there's a sale on, $25 instead of $30. He pays the money and decides to keep some for himself, he decides $2 for himself and a dollar each change for the builders.
So the builders end up paying $9 each, the apprentice has taken $2 for himself. 3 x9 = 27, + 2 = 29. Where's the other dollar gone ?

Re: An arithmetic teaser
Its how you tell the story, it is mixing debits and credits together.
Outs: 9+9+9=27
Ins: 25+2=27
Outs: 9+9+9=27
Ins: 25+2=27

Three Guys at A Hotel Riddle
Three guys rent a hotel room for the night. When they get to the hotel they pay the $$\$30 $$ fee, then go up to their room. Soon the bellhop brings up their bags and gives the lawyers back $5 because the hotel was having a special discount that weekend. So the three lawyers decide to each keep one of the $5 dollars and to give the bellhop a $2 tip. However, when they sat down to tally up their expenses for the weekend the could not explain the following details:
Each one of them had originally paid $10 (towards the initial $30), then each got back $1 which meant that they each paid $9. Then they gave the bellhop a $2 tip. HOWEVER, 3 • $9 + $2 = $29
The guys couldn't figure out what happened to the other dollar. After all, the three paid out $30 but could only account for $29.
Can you determine what happened?

Re: An arithmetic teaser
Builders or hotel, it is still counting the 2 pound tip twice.
If you insist.on counting it twice then you also need to count the 25 cost twice too, and add 25 to the 29. 25+29=54. Which is the total of all costs and gains (9x3 + 25+2), as each unit is a cost to one person and a gain to someone else.

Except he spelled it out, he didn't write it out in the form of an equation.

Re: An arithmetic teaser
I get 58, but I think they were a bit naughty how they wrote it out.
exponent first; then multiply and divisions left to right so
36/2x3+4
18x3+4
54+4
