ANZAC Day - Dress Code

Just attended my first ANZAC day ceremony down under with the kids Scout group. Nice and simple ceremony with a few old timers there.

One observation though is that they're a scruffy shower  Whilst I had gone into full Remembrance mode and got up early enough for a standard sh!t, shower n shave on suit and off we go it would appear that this isn't the "aussie way"? Lots of tracksuits, trainers, woolly hats (left on during the ceremony) and unshaven blokes?

Is this normal for Oz or just my local area? In short do I need to shackle my inner WO and just accept the local custom?

Genuinely interested and not just having a whinge ;)

Re: ANZAC Day - Dress Code

Going by dress standards for weddings and the like around here I'd say it was fairly common.

It's just the "Aussie Way". Be thankful that there isn't a parade of Southern Starred budgie smuggler clad blokes riding XXXX floats.

Don't fret about the state of suited and bootedness ......Anzac Day is so very well supported.

Rather a dozen people rock up in pjs and uggs to remember than just one knob in a whistle

ROMFT its the Aussie way mate - anything goes - its not important what's on the outside its what's on the inside that matters. Aussies generally leave the formal judgmental stuff to the Poms who have a stick up their arse - you'll get used to it mate;)

If they're prepared to get up and go to a dawn service they can wear what the **** they want imo. Me and the daughters went to the Mother's funeral the other week wearing jeans. We had nothing 'suitable' for a funeral in a freezing climate, had gone a bloody long way to be there and decided being there was 100% more important than what we were wearing.

On a slightly different note, OH and I have to go to DD's valedictory dinner, and on the invite it says to dress for "after 5". Now, normally I'm in pj's and fluffy robe as I go to bed ridiculously early, but I'm sure that isn't what is required. Just what am I supposed to wear????

No more uniform, damn civvy now. Flipflops are only to be worn to and from the shower onboard,

Might have to go for medals as a nipple ring though ;)

I had a google and it appears to mean formal wear. After 5 is a phrase meaning cocktail hour.

Stick to what you feel is right for you. Nothing wrong with wearing a whistle. Don't feel like you have to dress down to fit in if you feel for you being smart is also showing respect.

I both loathe and love ANZAC day. Hate the jingoism and the over the top sentimentality of the media especially the Eddie Maguire types but love the fact that the soldiers both past and present are being honoured.

I just saw a post by a friend of mine, who is a Sargeant in the Army. Apparently they were been banned from entering a RSL club after the march today, while in uniform. Apparently, if you were an ambo, firie, copper, Navy or Air Force, it was okay if you were in uniform, but not for the Army.....gob-smacked......

The other day I read in the Courier Mail, that a Major General in Queenland ordered that his troops were not even allowed to have a beer today...........one cup only of coffee at the gun-fire breakfast was okay....but no other alcohol.

Who banned him though the RSL or the Army? Not been allowed rig runs by the RN before and also not been allowed in some places when allowed on a rig run.

Not sure! Others are asking him the same question. I just edited my post to to include reference to a news article the other day on soldiers having a beer before the main march.

seems the ADF is desperately trying to take the fun out of being in the forces  RAN ships even going dry at sea FFS

last official parade, marching through Dundee, involved a few stiffeners beforehand then lots afterwards  free beer vouchers which the barmaids "forgot", to collect and then the RAF and Army gave us their vouchers as they had to leave

Given servicemen throughout history have selflessly given their lives so others can live theirs, the least anyone can do is let them have a few brews on the day they remember their comrades after all, their deceased mates would want them to remember them with a toast to their memory.

Shame on the nay Sayers to stopping the drinks the boring bastards:thumbdown:

Just did a quick google and what I also find stupid is soldiers made to wear the KFF (slouch) hat flat with the Rising Sun badge (only allowed on ceramonial occasions brim folded up) removed with normal work dress and most units having berets banned - not to mention having to wear Chinese made boots.......

The old black American style GP boots were brilliant - lasted for years - over 10 years service and went only through 1 pair for ceramonial use and 2 or 3 pairs of field boots.

Re: ANZAC Day - Dress Code

If spectating no dress code, if "on parade" smart casual seems to be the go up here. The old soldiers are usually impeccably dressed apart from the Vietnam Vets that seem to have embraced the 1960's hippy/aging biker look. The younger ex servicemen [Gulf & Afghanistan] were dressed in very smart suits & ties very nice to see them so well turned out.
Huge turn out today in Gympie, nice to see a few Brit regiments represented mainly older soldiers & sailors.
Many years ago I remember being on the remembrance day parade with old soldiers from the Boer war. Half a lifetime later there's no WW1 left & with each passing year the WW2 contingent diminishes:(
The "Boy" was on parade in Rockingham this morning, I wish he'd have a shave he looks like a freakin' wookie in navy cammos.:o

Something to do with ceremonial boots falling apart because they're made in China. The Army on parade in Brisbane all wore cammos today:ohmy:

Once they've melted away they could be recycled into heavy duty thongs.
