Default Anyone wanna buy a boat?

The aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal is up for sale on the Ministry of Defence's auction website.

Wonder if I could get a First Boat Owners Grant for it?

Do you get the feeling that the UK is having a closing down sale?

At three feet to the gallon it's not a cheap option.

I agree, how f**king sad a once great country is auctioning its only aircraft carrier online? I mean really, how low can a country go?

It is truly sad - and the people there should be genuinely worried about their ability to be defended

Sad it maybe, but even after the cutbacks, the UK will still be in the top three or four, probably only behind the US and China in terms of defence spending.

Then what are they spending it on?

Carriers - gone
Assault ship - gone
Frigates, destroyers - gone
Harriers - gone
Nimrod - gone
Sentinel - gone after Afghanistan (state of the art, brand new planes)
They are planning to only have 50 operational Challenger 2 tanks
etc

Yet they still have the Red Arrows and bands marching round Buckinghuge palace

What a mess

It's an interesting question, but the defence budget is still huge by global standards. Personally I would like to see defence spending set at 4% of GDP and never allowed to go below that. It won't happen though

I agree. UK government should cut some welfare, 20 000 more civil servants. foreign aid, and use the money saved to increase defence spending
