Default anyone know what this is called

We have a resident spider in our back garden. It's living in what i presume is an un used drain cause when you go near it, it scoots back down the hole. It's not a trap door as there's no web. Anyone know what type it is or whether it's dangerous. Advice please

By the look of it, it's a wolf spider. Boy does it shift. I won't be messing with it. Just wish it'd kill more flies.

Area of distribution: Australia-wide.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Venom toxicity: The bite of the Wolf Spider is poisonous but not lethal. Although non-aggressive, they will bite if provoked and should be considered dangerous to humans.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Painful bite: The bite may be very painful. Immediate first aid and medical attention, particularly as to children or the elderly.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Spider Identification: The adult Wolf spider is 15 mm to 30 mm in body length; of mottled grey to brown in colour, with a distinct Union Jack impression on it's back. The female Wolf spider carries it's young on it's back.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Habitat: The Wolf spider is a ground dweller, with a burrow retreat. This spider has a roving nocturnal lifestyle to hunt their prey and can move very rapidly when disturbed. Commonly found around the home, in garden areas with a silk lined burrow, sometimes with a lid or covered by leaf litter or grass woven with silk as a little fence around the rim of the burrow.

A tin of Mortein will do the trick. I'd personally use the whole can but some of you tree hugger type bods might just use a little squirt

I'm with you. There isn't enough Mortein in this world for the big ugly spiders.

Yikes! I don't like spiders ... is it illegal to kill them?! What's Mortein? Does it kill them .. Mort in French means death so I guess that makes sense!

No it's not illegal to kill them, though as MM says, they do more good than harm. We get quite a few huntsman in here (which also do more good than harm) and I don't kill them. I catch them in a tub and put them in the garden

Mortein is an insect killer spray (other brands are available ) and some of the bigger spiders need a long, long spray of it before they get the message.

Yeah, my husband used to remove any offending spiders to the garden when we lived in England. He doesn't now. I have told him to leave Scooter alone as he's not too near to the back door and where he is no one sits there anyway.
