Default Anyone know anything about Hashimoto's and heart attack?

My mum has Hashimoto's disease (auto immune disease concerned with thyroid) and was admitted to hospital last night with suspected heart attack. Wondered if any of you Hashi's girls or med people know what causes it? I have googled but everything seems a bit medspeak and I need an interpreter.

Mrs OH doesn't know much about it, but from her nursing experience it is probably caused by a viral or bacterial infection, as Hashimotos is more prevalent in older women. However, my wife has seen it occur a few times in women that have had severe shock or an accident. She's going to have a look on the med sites, they may have something. Hang on, sorry to hear about your Mom.

Thanks guys.

It's not a false alarm... apparently she had a massive tachycardic episode which was continuing by the time they got her into A+E. They managed to get it all recorded on the ECG and the heart specialist is with her today. Previous episodes have stopped by the time she's got to hospital.

For the past few days she's been grey in colour and complaining of back pain and neck pain. Not good.

Reading up on it Ipom, it usually has a good prognosis....so try not to worry too much

It can sometimes take years for symptoms to develop and when they do it is because the immune system is attacking the thyroid causing it to become swollen and irritated therefore the thyroid doesn't produce hormones causing the patient to feel fatigued, Lethargic and depressed and also have irregular/ slow heart rate ( this is where the suspected heart attack would possible have come in ).

The condition can be hereditary and is more common in women so it might be worth getting checked out yourself.

The disease is incurable but it can be treated with Thyroid replacement therapy.

Hope this has helped....pm me if you need a chat xx

Hi Ipom

You can sometime get pain in the neck from this condition but not really sure about her back. Make sure she mentions this to the dactors just incase they could be missing something ? If she has been feeling run down resently she could pick up things easily.

Hi iPom,
Sorry to hear about your Mum, hope she gets better soon.
My Mum recently had a heart scare and my Dad has prostate cancer.
You suddenly get to this point where you realise they are not young any more.
It makes me feel a bit guilty about moving to the other side of the world.
Is your Mum in Australia or U.K?

Hi Mate

So sorry to hear about your mum. I've got Hashimotos as you know and I've never heard it being linked to Heart Attacks? It certainly can have an effect on the regularity of the beat though and tachycardic episodes. Do you know if shes been checked for Graves Disease also? You can actually carry both anti-bodies but as soon as one is found testing usually stops. It may also be worth her pushing to get her calcium levels checked too. When I had my thyroid removed one of my parathyroids was swollen (possibly due to Hashi) and so was removed - lack of calcium can have a huge effect on the body/heart.

Hope shes feeling a lot better soon

Hi iPom, sorry to hear about your mum, like MrsJackaroo I havent heard of Hashimotos being linked to heart attack (although like MrsJ also mentioned I have had lots of irregular beat & heart racing episodes), I hope things can be brought under control & that she recovers quickly.

Issie, I dont know if you have Hashimotos or know someone that does, but if you or they are back to normal after simply taking thyroxin then you should be thankful - some are not so lucky & continue to suffer or go on to develop other nasty problems &/or diseases because of Hashimotos.

I don't know anything about it iPom I'm afraid, but I was unexpectedly taken into hospital this weekend too, so I just wanted to say that my thoughts are with you.
