Well I hadn't, not until this weekend at the Football, I've found a word in common use in amongst younger people here, that may actually be racist and offensive in this country.
Blimey !!!
Wog isn't.... Paki isn't But Muzza may well be. Quite common apparently as well.
Anyone heard of it ?

It's very difficult to find a word or term here that actually upsets people, Except for those aimed at aboriginals and to a much lesser extent South east Asians. I've never heard a word in my 26 years here that actually got the South Mediterraneans riled before.
I guess they will take it on board, and assimilate. Being used to this country and it's ways. I guarantee they will be using it themselves about themselves within a few months.

I dont know... I dont think so. What really got me intrigued about this, is I'm sure I live in the most "meditteranean influenced" part of Aussie here in Coburg, and I'd not heard of this term before.
According to my 23 year old Daughter it's just another word for Mario.... At the football (soccer) it's taken as derogatory.... The North side of Melbourne Victory being for Muzzas.... the South side for Brits and Skips..
I think it's mostly light hearted,

His name is Murray & that's where his BE name comes from.

It was popular in the youth culture of some of the schools I have worked in. Often it was used quite openly to talk to someone with, or as a nickname for muslims within a friendship group.
I'm not sure if it's necessarily offensive or just a shortening term. Needless to say that someone, somewhere will find it offensive...

I've found this interpretation on the Melbourne Victory BBS.
Mario = Mars = Muzza
Sounds about right to me.
The other versions on here are intersting and one actually came up with the same version as Ipom's
