Any IT Contractors here?
#16

At the moment I believe can't get a better return by going PTY here, its a long story and involves personal arrangements I've made which I'm very happy with. The client I work for don't have to deal with any of the above, the agency that placed me here do the Super etc.
The arrangement will not last forever however, I'd be interested to know of any tax breaks available as PTY, even without my current arrangement I didn't see much advantage to PTY but as I'm recently arrived I may have missed something.

Agencies over here tend to offer PAYE as a value add but with legislation it's just becoming more and more of a pain to do PAYE.

That's right, the agency has to do it. That is unless you contract direct and unlikely a company would pay contract rates as a PAYE. They may as well offer a perm job.

The type of company I usually work for would not employ a contractor directly. When I was asked to return to one of my old contracts last year they insisted I go through one of their agencies (this was UK), even though we where already known to each other, I made sure that the rate was appropriate.
The current arrangement suits me for now, but if I ever become aware of a situation when I'll be better off as a Pty I start one.

Administration. A PAYE contractor is essentially an employee and needs to be treated as such, so for me that means I have to deal with super, medicare, tax and all the other stuff that goes along with employing people including notice periods, holidays... Too much risk with PAYE.
Pty Ltd contractors are easier. Business rules apply. They invoice me and I pay them and I don't have to worry about all the other superfluous stuff. Still have to deal with payroll tax though.
The type of contractors I deal with though are contractors through and through and wouldn't even dream about going PAYE.

Most agents seem to give the option and even have a payg company of choice. they don't necessarily seem to be burdened with it that's what the payg coy is for. I ask to stay with my current payg coy. Can you clarify what you mean by still having to deal with payroll - I thought an invoice was an invoice or are you referring to chasing the funds from accounts payable or whatever...?Excuse me if I am being thick..
Generally speaking, with things like super, for a Pty Ltd company contractor they would take care of that themselves. With payroll tax, it doesn't matter if they are a Pty Ltd or PAYE/PAYG, it still has to be sorted out by the agency.
In a nutshell it is what the government charges us to employ someone.

Hi DeanCm,
Are you an agent or a manager?
I received my permanent residency in July 2009 and we've finally bought our one-way tickets to Melbourne for end of August this year.
My skills are Java/J2EE/XML/Oracle technologies. Would you be able to help secure interviews and/or employment nearer the time maybe?
Any advice or assistance would be very much appreciated.
Kind Regards,
Paul.

Something ridiculous like only one successful prosecution since it was introduced.
