Any accountants who can help??
Just when we think life cant throw anything else at us, what with court and family problems etc along comes the taxman.
Hubby got a letter today and he is being investigated for his self assessment 06/07. and as he did it himself thinks he may have cocked up!
he has no receipts and just wondering what percentage of things he can claim for.
during the year being investigated, we got a car for him for work 5k. and also business is registered at our home, so could we claim for part of mortgage, and utility bills?? what about depretiation on his previous car??
we have no idea what we are doing at it is seriously stressing us out, just want to cry.
any help is greatly appreciated

items off bank statements. it was the only thing we had to get figures from. TBH i dont know how he came up with the figure.
he moved just before assement date and his mum threw everything away, thinking he didnt need it because he didnt take it.
now we are panicking what will happen

I dont like the situation you are in and you will have a hell of a lot of explaining to do when they go to see you.
Call them up and explain EVERYTHING. Meet with them if you have to. Dont be surprised if they do an assessment of their own based on your bank statements and the allowances you are allowed that you end up owing them money.
Just be straight with them from the begining -thats all you can do.
Good luck.

if owing them money is the worst thing then thats not too bad, just panicking inc case it's a mark on criminal record and then bye bye visas.
havnt done anything illegal, just assessed as we thought we should. this is first time it's been done by us.
it's just annoying. when you think things are getting better along comes something else to knock you back.
they have nothing better to do than hassle hard working tax payers. if they wanna recover some money maybe they should be loking at the scroungin bast*rds who sit on their arses all day.:curse:

Ignorance if the law id not a defence. But good luck and hope it gets sorted, the advice is excellent, talk to the ATO and explain everything.

Be proactive - call them up, make them see that you want to find out what the problem is & put everything right. Stay calm, stay very polite & apologetic about any mistakes even if you think they are being out of order, explain everything you can about the house move, the stress you've all been under, etc. Offer them your bank statements, anything you've got that will help sort it out. You definitely don't want a question mark hanging over your visa at this stage.
Very best of luck to you all

Hi,
I doubt you will get a criminal conviction on this one, all they are interested in is getting the money that you may owe them, usually legal action is a very long way down the road. I do suggest you find an accountant who can help.

If you are in the UK, you would have to have been doing something very deliberately wrong, involving a lot of money, deception etc to get anywhere close to criminal action. However, I would strongly recommend you ring a few local accountants and see what they have to say and consider using one to deal with this for you. If I were you, I wouldn't even attempt to deal with it yourself.
Don't want to scare you, but this is what happened http://web.mac.com/nickmorgan/HMRC/home.html to one chap who tried to deal with an investigation himself. Now he made a hash of it and really should have used an accountant - if for no other reason than it would probably have saved him money - but to be honest, if you get an aggressive and unreasonable inspector (and some although by no mean all of them are both), having an accountant to protect you is really worthwhile if only to reduce the worry factor.
And yes I am an accountant!

Re: Any accountants who can help??
thanks everyone.
hubby finally got in touch with his acountant, and she said it's nothing to worry about, he just put expences in the wrong boxes. Worst case off her sums we might owe then £500 which isnt too bad.
i wouldnt mind but he only got a rebate of £550, hardly mega bucks. Everyone on the site he is on got between 1500-2000.
Hubby has 3k worth of fuel, without adding on all other expences.
his accountant said there picking people out like cherries.
just pees me off that there looking into it for £550. it will cost more than that to investigate it!:curse:
