Re: another question i need views on
i think corporal punishment is more about the institution dishing out the physical punishment rather that the physical punishment itself ... i used to get a smacked bum as a kid, but it wasnt seen as corporal punishment - it was family discipline and punishment for not doing as i was told.

Have to agree with you both, a little smack on the bottom is NOT corporal punishment, it's a normal way of dealing with children, it's far far removed from a 'beating.'
Personally I think they should bring back 'the cane' in schools, might stop all these 'out of control' kids roaming the streets, stabbing each other, as seems the norm at the moment
Just the thought of having the cane made kids behave.

Yup, agree with Sue. Smack on the bum or the hand from mum and dad, and (not me obviously) the slipper, blackboard rubber (can I use either of those words these days), ruler etc from the teachers. Both had their place but to my mind the corporal bit only relates to the teachers.

I am sorry i don't agree
I would never smack or hit another adult if I didn't agree with what they are doing so why would I do it to a child?
Violence is violence, how can I tell my child it is wrong to hit if I then go and hit them? Children do not differentiate between types of hitting.
However I do believe in discipline but never violence.
Would you countenance hitting your dog? for most people the answer is no so why is it ok to hit kids??
OK thats my rant now shoot me down in flames

Re: another question i need views on
I have tried smacking my children once or twice. Despite doing it very half - heartedly (shocked them rather than hurt them) I felt so guilty afterwards I haven't done it again.
I just shout at them instead - still doesn't have any effect but makes me feel better

All beating whether a hand smack or using an implement is corporal punishment.

It depends entirely how you define it!
IMO a good smacking isn't corporal punishment within the meaning of the act - it's a normal way of shocking a child into improving its ways.
Corporal punishment is what I used to get occasionally at school: six of the best. Hurt like hell for an hour. And worked.

Have 2 children, smacked my first child on the bottom a couple of times when he was about 4 . I have to say that it shocked me into behaving better rather than him, smacking does not work! With my second child I use all the new techniques as encouraged by 'Supernanny' type programmes on TV and generally it does work. There are always odd moments when they dont though and I think that it is up to us, as adults, to cope with the situation without resorting to hitting, I do understand that this is sometimes very difficult to do though.......

Smacking or any physical violence towards children is child abuse.
If you hit an adult it's a criminal offence.
If I hit my wife I could go to prison for it.
Why should anyone be allowed to hit defenceless children?
Any political party that makes child abuse (including smacking) an imprisonable offence has my vote.

Normally when people hit /smack children it is when they are in a temper, and is an act of violence, it is normally to make the adult doing the hitting feel better. Being hit does not make a child think I wont do that again, it usually makes them think I hate you you cow etc.
Another reason for hitting children is to make you look as though you are in control when in reality you arent.
Violence or the threat of violence is used as a means of control not education. Rapists usually rape for that feeling of power.

Personally I think that hitting a child is wrong and you shouldn't discipline them with violence. But a smack on the bum is different to a beating.
I wouldn't hit another adult if they weren't doing what I wanted so I certainly wouldn't hit a child. I don't think you should be allowed to hit defenceless children.
