Point Cook
Carrum Downs
Cranbourne
Chelsea
Springvale
Bentleigh

Brisbane:
Inala
Springfield Lakes
Collingwood Park
Bellbird Park
Goodna
Indooroopilly
Mt Gravatt
Sunnybank Hills
Woodridge
You would be lucky to get a decent house at that price in Indooroopilly.

Mt Gravatt is a nice area, not upmarket but not down market either (has some flash area's though). Only 8km from the CBD. If you can get a small rental there for $350 would be a good choice. Personally I would pay $50 more ($400/week) to rent in Mt Gravatt rather than going to a far out suburb - you might save that in transport costs anyway. The best pocket is between Logan Rd and the south east freeway IMO.

The other one of your list I would look at is Sunnybank Hills. Further out (15kms) on a busy bus line but has some lovely quiet family areas if that is what you are after at a cheap price.

Thanks for all your replies!

So I've looked at the areas you've all mentioned and cross referenced it withe train line stops on Metlink and this is my revised list for Melbourne;

Cheltenham
Patterson Lakes
Frankston South
Mordialloc
Narre Warren
Berwick
Seaford
Cranbourne
Bentleigh

is that any good?

Ok so am I missing something or has Brisbane got a shitty train service? I can't seem to find train stops at most of the places on my list, the only ones I could find were

Woodridge
Toowong
Taringa
Cleveland

Taringa train stop is Indooroopilly

There are lots more but, unless you live fairly central the public transport is pretty crap from many places....and the traffic is worse

Inala - No - closest train Darra and Wacol
Springfield Lakes - They are making 2 stops there eventually but it is a new place miles away
Collingwood Park - Redbank train
Bellbird Park - Redbank train
Goodna - Goodna train
Indooroopilly - Indooroopilly train
Mt Gravatt - No - Busway.
Sunnybank Hills - Sunnybank train or Busway
Woodridge - Woodridge train or Busway

Train system is hit & miss - some slices of Brissie have no train service but they are being filled by busways. These are dedicated bus roads which suburban services feed onto.

Cleveland is abit dodgey as it was Brisbane's shipping port for a while. It's still full of people who have travelled in from overseas. They are finally removing an old sailing ship, the 'Dawn Treader', off Cleveland Point.

In that case you should take neighbouring Taringa off as well then....it does have its own train stop though
