ACT, renting a house
Can anyone tell me how to get around the auction style assessment, Landlords seem to conduct when trying to rent a house within the ACT.
I'm currently living in the UK seeking a visa for residence and the ACT is one of the places were considering, but I'm concerned that when we get the visa we wont be able to rent a property.
Not being in Aus to chase one is definitely against us!!!
Regards.

What do you mean by 'auction style'?
You might just have to settle for checking into a hotel to start with then finding somewhere once you are here.

They definitely do like you to be here - the eyeball test and check out the references sort of stuff. Sure it is a sellers market but once you are here in person it will be a whole lot easier. My workmate has put in an application for her daughter who lives interstate and because the daughter isnt here, even she is finding it a tad tricky.
Best solution is to go for short term holiday/serviced accommodation for a month or so and work from there. You will pick up something within a month or so. Best place to try is probably www.allhomes.com.au and put serviced apartments in the search engine and you will get quite a list of them.

Yeah - you should be ok - we rented after 5 weeks - you have to be quick to view and then quick to fill in the applications.
Sometimes you have to offer more than what others do - we offered 12 months rent in advance - that helped us secure a place. But maybe 4 months in advance will help you pick one up!!
