Hello BE people!!
We have been here 2 weeks today and think we have settled on an area finally!! So now to find a school for Maddison, who as I've said will be 16 next month (OCT)....so will it be yr 11 that she's supposed to be in? In the UK she would have just started yr 11....but if I'm correct then she will be almost finishing yr 11 here?
Cheers guys...x

Yes, go for year 10 for the rest of this year, you dont want her to have missed out on one year of a two year course if she has any aspirations for further education.

He could now be in grade 11 (qld) but that would mean next year he'd be one of the youngest in the country sitting grade 12 exams prior to his 17th birthday
Most other states do them at 18. Many people dont understand that aus has 8/9 different education systems and in them eg WA and QLD, recent starting age changes mean kids our ages are not on the current system and finishing grade 12 in the year they turn 17, hence lots of confusion when you post about it.
Your daughter would be at a massive disadvantage trying to take grade 12 exams without having completed year 11 work, could be a real problem if she wants to do uni etc, scores are very competitive to get in.

Different states do different things. In some states the HSC is two years - 11 and 12. Why would you want to join towards the end of one year that could count towards two years' worth of marks?

My son will be 16 in Oct & he is in year 10.
I don't know what the system is in WA but certainly in QLD, year 11 & 12 are the important ones & you would not want to be starting towards the end of yr 11 if you could help it.
Good luck!

My daughter was 15 in Sept. If we were still in Perth she would be coming to the end of year 10, in the UK she'd have just started year 10 and here in NSW she's in year 9! The age cut off dates are all different too. It was Jan when we were in Perth, then changed to June (to be more in line with the Eastern states, we were told), Sept in Uk and end of March here (though the govt schools are still the end of July)!!!
No wonder people coming are so confused...

And thanks to everybody that has replied! I did think it was only me that was confused! Now I know that I'm not the only one it does make me feel better! PHEW!
Maddy would like to finish the end of yr 11 now and go into yr 12 in Feb, but we'll have to talk her out of that! She's an intelligent girl (don't know where she's come from really!!)...she's already got her maths and science GCSE, but I agree that starting yr 11 in Feb is in her best interest!
Thanks again for all of your advice!
Take care...Lisa,xx

Ah, well if she is turning 15 this year then I would still be going for the year 9 for the rest of this year and year 10 in 2010 - that would put her in synch with most Aus states otherwise she would be one of the youngest at uni. WA and Qld are gradually trying to get their ages into line with the rest of the country. However if she must go into year 11 I guess there would be kids of her age still.
