Is $30k enough for a family of 5 in Adelaide?
#1
Hi,
Just wondered if $30k is enough to start a new life with three small kids in Adelaide? Do you take your money and make a go of it or stay put in the UK when you really wanna go?
Anybody else in the same boat?
What would be the minimum that a family needs?
Thanks John.

No, but 30k, if your clever will furnish a house and buy a cheap car and a downpayment on a rnetal bond.
I think also John is trying to ascertain how quickly you will find work and how much you will earn.
I wouldn't worry about getting here and the short term. It is more about are you going to be able to sustain a lifestyle that you desire or that will support your family.

I've known people who have arrived with much less and survived. There are always the grot jobs that no one else wants, if you don't mind getting up at 4:00 a.m. to clean offices and that sort of thing you'll do well. Seems to be best to grab any job that you can, employers seem to have an aversion to even considering an unemployed person.

We spent $10K when we got here. I can't see why people need more than that.
$8500 on a car and $1500 on a rent deposit. That was it!

It can be done but it does depend on how fast you can get a job etc.

We had to pay six months rent upfront as we had no references in Australia. At the end of that 6 months we still had no permanent jobs so we were still using our initial cash for rent and living. All in all the $70k from selling our UK house, which was supposed to be a deposit on a house, was completely eaten up in living expenses. Oh and the moves around the state to various jobs.
