Smile Who actually gets work permits in Barbados?

Hey All,

Apparantly I had this in the wrong forum. Had some good advice already but thought I would fish for some more. haha. Hope this is in the right forum now - the bajan one. Anyway sorry for the duplicate.

Lived in Barbados before as a visitor and been there on several holidays. I have many friends and an extended family there. Like a million other people, my dream is to move back to Barbados and work this time however legally only! Its just not worth the risk otherwise.

I think I've heard about all the difficulties, and the ins and outs, of the work permit situation in Barbados but surely some people must still be getting them somehow?!

Im led to believe that if someone has a specialist skill or the employer cannot fill the position with someone local, then that is how work permits can be obtained for non nationals. Likewise with setting up your own business and employing locals.

So can anyone tell me anything positive for a change?
Has anyone reading this actually been given a work permit?
What posistions are people doing who get these work permits granted?
Any tips?
Im guessing its all down to your bank balance?

Thanks.

You already have the facts as stated in your thread ie specialist skill or business. The types of jobs included in the past IT specialists, Doctors, but are now mostly off shore banking experts and tax advisers as most of the major companies employ those types of people.

However the new government are now being extremely cautious who they provide work permits too. I have had a work permit but they are now not renewing on that basis.

The thing most people do not know is that if you apply for a work permit and get denied you will be "banned" from the island for a year and in the new green paper they are talking about upping that to two year. Also be aware that if you do get a company to sponsor you a work permit and decide to leave the company then you will have to leave the island immediately. Owning a company is not a guarantee of a work permit - you will still have to prove that you personally have specialist skills.

Your bank balance has nothing to do with a work permit however you will need a healthy one to even consider applying for it - my first 3 year work permit cost me a total of $11,000bds (lawyers fees, permit fee and company set up).
