I think those warnings might be after the female joggers who we assaulted on Long Beach last year - it was a big story and I think they were from Canada so that may have stuck in many peoples minds. However that could have happened anywhere - dont get seduced by secluded beaches or beaches at night we have an increasing community of immigrants who are illegal here and some of these are from criminal elements so think as carefully as you would at home about giving someone a lift, leaving ya home unlocked, bag unattended on the beach etc...
Very excited! It's going to be a great experience for my daughter and I. (I hope we don't get on each others nerves too much haha).
The only thing that is making me a wee bit apprehensive is I've had a few people now over the past week or so severely warn me on how dangerous Barbados is, comment that I'm crazy for going there because it's so dangerous and have had a million or so people go on and on how expensive it is there.
I know that things are imported and are going to naturally cost more but I'm getting a bit nervous after all these comments. I'm going to post a separate thread I think to try to form a cheat sheet of sorts.
4 more sleeps! woohoooo!

Serendipity, I think it is irresponsible to suggest that immigranys are responsible for the rise in crime. I reckon if you did a study you would find the same percentage of criminals in both the indigenous and immigrant populations!!.... It is a worldwide misconception to blame rising crime levels on immigrants..... Don't forget we (on this forum) are also immigrants!! (Even if some of us might think we are a different class of immigrant, because we are from the "developed" world)
No offence is intended by the above statement (either directly to you Serendipity or the the forum contributers as a whole), this is just a little hobby horse of mine!!

I'm not sure the percentage of criminals would be similar in the legal and illegal communities, to be honest.......
I can't say I know for a fact, but I would imagine the likelihood of turning to crime is much greater when you're legally unable to search for legitimate work.

No offence taken. It is a fact that since the Caricom borders opened there are criminal elements that have chosen to come hide out in Barbados and are under the radar of any immigration legalities hence the need to really beef up the Barbadian intelligence operations here it investment in IT.
I did not suggest immigrants per se are responsible for the increase in crime i mentioned that there is a criminal element that have come illegally to the country from other caricom countries (after committing crimes there and on false papers) and as a result Barbados is seeing an increase in crime. This information comes from police officers and the Barbados Tourist Board (after a GF of mine was mugged). Now im sure Barbados is not the only caricom country dealing with this issue so im not speculating that Barbados is any worse than any other island
Now it could be said that the Bajan Immigration Dept and Police Force are using this as a excuse but after having had personal experience of this myself the info makes sense to me
