Default doctors :)

I was just wondering how it works over here - have had a look at previous threads, but didn't find anything - refer me back to them if I'm just repeating somebody's question.

Do you need to register at your local GP asap to be admitted in case of an illness later on, or do you just pop in when you need it and they will register you then? Have they got some limits on the number of patients and so can tell you to go elsewhere? How do you decide who to register with? Is it the one you pick or is it the nearest one? I guess we've got three really near GP offices here (generally it seems there are quite a few in the area!) but how will I know who is good? Do doctors here try to cure everything within the four walls of their medical practice (like they sometimes do in the UK where one person specialises in gynaecology but at the same time removes a mole from your back What do you generally think about medical care in BB?

What documents are needed to register? We both have private medical insurance with AXA.

Thanks for all the answers. Not that I'm planning to fall ill or something, but it's better to be prepared I guess

You can pretty much pick whichever doctor you want to go to on the island. Just call and ask if you can become a patient. I believe the "rules" differ between doctors offices.

There are specialists here, so if you want to go to a gyno or a dermotologist then feel free!

I go to NovaMed in Sargeant's Village ChCh and I like the care I get there.

Did that help?

I've just tended to go to the nearest Medical Centre for treatment and have been seen without problem and they have sorted things for me.

I haven't been on the island long and last week my partner collapsed. I had a bit of a panic as I didn't know how to get an ambulance. I'd recommend having any emergency numbers to hand before the event.

The ambulance from QEH might take several hours to arrive. The private one was about 30 mins (Bridgetown to Prospect) but was well worth the BD$175.

My goodness, that sounds awful! I've read somewhere what it's better to take a taxi than wait for an ambulance. I hope I will never need to call one...

Thanks for the info on Med Centre.

Unfortunately we couldn't get him off the bathroom floor even with 3 of us trying. He was really in a lot of pain every time we moved him.

The ambulance crew were very good though.

He was at Sunset Crest for about 4 hours and then they oved im to QEH which was an experience I would not want to repeat.

They got him to QEH around 2am, admitted him at 6am but he wasn't moved to a ward until 8pm.

Gosh, what happened to him, if you don't mind me asking? was it some tropical disease that made him collapse or something completely different?
I guess you do need an ambulance in cases like this - taxi wouldn't be any good...
Hope your partner's ok now...

Almost sounds like the poor guy had a stone....I've seen it turn tough men into little crying girls.

It was an inner ear infection which caused vertigo. He lost all balance and couldn't move his head without being in agony.

He's a lot better now, it just takes time. (and sea sickness pills)

Just a pity we had guest from the UK for the last two weeks.
