Its good that your son is still doing well out of it, good luck to him.
Most of my mates who were in the contracting game are now struggling, but they also blew the money thinking it would last forever.
You are right about the IT industry in Oz requiring broader skills, that was one of my main problems last time as I was specialised in one field. So I was knackered really.
Not really bothered what I do now. See what happens and go with the flow.
