Young(ish) Professionals Moving to Aussie city (that are not bringing their family)
Hi all
Ive just turned 31 and am moving to Melbourne this year on my own.
Im bored of hearing about families moving to oz - what about people with no going over there on their own who wanna have real fun.
I plan to work and live it up in the city centre if i can, hopefully the CBD. I dont plan on getting a house in the boring suburbs, I prefer the city life.
Anyone else out there plan on doing similar this year?
Would love to hear from ya

Make sure you check out other inner burbs before deciding on the CBD.
South Yarra... Prahan.... Toorak.....St Kilda..... Fitzroy... Northcote......Carlton and Brunswick, you may find they are more lively and to your liking than the actual CBD.... Basically anywhere that has a few tram lines in the area should be OK.
Having said that, I would personally love to live at Docklands as a single.

Thanks guys. Is Dockland like a trendy area or something.
Another thing I was told that you MUST have a car in Melbourne. Is this true. Even though I would like to live in the city I would have thought the public transport is good enough so I can walk everywhere?

If you wanted to travel up to country towns you may have to hire one, but even then Vline trains are just up the road from docklands and are very cheap and they include a all day met card for the whole of Melbourne. It's only 19 dollars to Echuca for example, which is on the NSW border, 8 bucks of that value is in the met card.
Docklands in very close in, right next to the Casino, which is open 24/7... lots of restaurants and bars, but it's a bit plastic from my point of view... I mean the entertainment around there. The enviornment, with waterviews and mass transport facilities, would make up for having to travelling out to the close by inner suburbs, where the entertainment is more to most peoples tastes.
You can Walk to Telstra dome and the MCG and the Tennis Centre from Docklands really easily.
I'd love to not have to own a car, and Docklands is one place where you could easily do that.
BTW Melbournes night life venues run at a factor of around 2/1 over Sydneys, on any given night there are twice as many live venues than Sydney... Melbourne has more in common with what you would expect in London when it comes to Night life.
This Weekend in Sydneys Advertised Venues..... 37
http://sydney.citysearch.com.au/musi...This%20Weekend
This Weekend in Melbourne Advertised Venues 256
http://melbourne.citysearch.com.au/m...This%20Weekend
This Weekend London.... 67 Venues/gigs Friday
http://www.timeout.com/london/search...Friday&submit=
66 Venues/gigs Saturday
http://www.timeout.com/london/search...turday&submit=
43 Venues/gigs Sunday

Just to cap off, did another search on the Night life Sydney v Melbourne, there are 1765 venues listed on the main search engine for night life in Aus Under Melbourne..... V 1432 in Sydney.

I'm (about!) the same age & moving to Melbourne shortly. I do have family & friends already living there - which makes things LOADS easier for me, however it's still a big change & brand new city for me to get my head around . I'm sure Australia will feel very foreign for quite some time once I'm there!
If you're on facebook, type in Melbourne on the search function & join any groups etc that look interesting & the same with the website meetup.com
Hopefully those will open some doors to meeting lots of new people in the city once you've arrived around the same age bracket
Also, friends who've moved there last year don't have a car & get around just fine using the trams or splitting a taxi at the end of a night out (apparently not expensive). Parking however IS a nightmare around the city and flippin' expensive!
I'll also be trawling myspace shortly to keep an eye on any bands /dj's I'm interested in who have gigs lined up for melbourne in the future - sometimes they keep them fairly quiet / don't advertise much but update it on their webpages. Love music / gigs & could be an interesting way of meeting new people out there as well.
Really looking forward to some sunshiney weather now!
