I was talking to one of the doctors from there and mentioned the film 'SuperSize Me' about the bloke that ate nothing but the big M's food for a month. Could have killed the bloke!

This company is putting so much money in to treatment for this and especially Diabetes as this is now on the increase too. He actually said that the bigger and unhealthier people get the more money our company will make.

He actually ended the conversation 'we love fat people'!

I think I had I better get out on my mountain bike a bit more before the medicals ! ! !

Being overweight is not a risk factor for heart disease on it's own (if it was then all fat people would have heart attacks, which does not happen). The risk factors for heart disease are high cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking, old age & hereditary (& high homocysteine). If you have high cholesterol, changing your diet is not going to reduce it, the only way to do that is with drugs. Same goes for high blood pressure. If you are overweight with one of these risk factors, then that's a problem. I've just spent 10 days in hospital with heart problems. I'm ok now, but had a hell of a scare. I have no risk factors, my cholesterol is below average & my blood pressure is normal. My homocysteine level is raised, this can have the same effect as high cholesterol, but not much is known about it & it's a bit of a grey area. High homosysteine is easily treated with folic acid & vitamins (wish I knew this a few weeks ago!). The consultant says I fall into a category of 'they don't know why', which is not cool.

I cant imagine why or how my brother-in-law has had a heart attack. like i said, he is 35 (!!??) and not "especially" overweight - might have a kebab belly but nothing more than that. it has frightened the life out of me - i didnt even have a drink last night!!!! and our fridge is full of veggies and fish now!! :o

thanks everyone for your kind words of encouragement - rooksie and family x

Like I said previously, being overweight is not a risk factor on it's own. Being overweight with a risk factor is a problem. Diet is not going to reduce your cholesterol level significantly, only drugs can do than, same goes for blood pressure. 35 is young, I'm only 41 & have had problems. My doctor says I'm too young as well. Alcohol is not a problem with the heart, unless you're a chronic alcoholic. It could be an hereditary problem or it could have just 'happened', like it did to me.

So, if like me, anyone ever wonders occasionally if emigrating to Australia is a little bit "off the wall", dont!!! Seize the bloody day and live life to the full because you never know, do you ......???!!!! :(

Anyway, enough of that morbid stuff. Hopefully he will make a full recovery and come to visit us in Oz one day soon, eh?! Positive thinking, works for me!! :)

Life really is full of surprises - not always nice ones.

OMG Rooksie, how awful! Love to you and yours, tried to send you some karma but it won't let me. Thinking of you all.

Hiya Rooksie,

I know how you feel. My brother in law had a heart attack last year at the age of 34!!!!!!!! :scared: He has since had to have a heart transplant. This was all unexpected and out of the blue and I agree that it does make you think about your own lifestyle and making changes. However, after a while, the good intentions do wear off a bit.

This is the main reason why we decided to give australia a go. No one knows what is round the corner! I will miss my family immensely and will not be on hand should anyone else have medical problems, to lend a helping hand and support. We just have to hope and pray that this will not happen.

Sending you my wishes

Diane

God, Rooksie, what a shocker. Hope he is on the road to recovery. I'm a firm believer in the power of positive thoughts so am sending some with this reply.

Hi,

Sorry to hear about your brother-in-law, hope he makes a quick recovery.

Do you mind me asking which migration lawyer you used in Devon, as we are about to appoint one from there.
