I like York. It would be great to live there if you were in to hang gliding or paragliding as there is a good launch site there.

And thanks for the pictures - very grateful!!

All the best

York is a good spot for what you wish to acheive in AU, it is very community spirited, if you like the fact people know one another & everyone looks out for each other than it will be exactly what you wish for.
We attended a wedding out that way about 10 years back & loved the place, I've visited several times when family came to Perth, yes it's bit of a way out of Perth, but it is a creative spot for artists, has some lovely local handmade furniture, you'll get a drink at the pub with a barman that remembers your name.
Go for it.
It's not as remote as heaps of other areas & ideal for Olive growing I belive.
Good Luck

I like York, I think some people are being very harsh about it compared to the 24/7 bright lights of Perth:D

My aunt and uncle moved there about 12 months ago having spent the last 30 years in Perth and they like it.

ah, there are plenty of olive growers in WA. It is hot in summer (no sea breeze) and not much else to do than growing olives, keep a few sheeps and chatting to the few village people and the odd tourist.

After reading this, I was slightly confused looking at Sunbather's pics. A fair sized main street and number of cars for a few village people and the odd tourist.

Weird how we all have the same eyes but all see something different through them :D

Why York and why WA? theres plenty of much better places over in Country Victoria or country NSW.
You can grow olives in all of OZ except tasmania, it might be too cold

If I wanted to retire in WA and grow olives, most probably I would go further south simply for climatic reasons. Summers are very hot and winters cold. The land in summer around York will look just brown for atleast 6 months. Down south the climatic conditions in my view are better, the rural or country options are endless. My choice would be around Denmark. I know people who moved to Bridgetown and like it.
