Hi Folks

Haven't been around for a while but am looking to move possibly to York in WA. Anyone here from there or nearby? If so, what is it like. We are looking to enjoy the smallholding type lifestyle. Any help/information most gratefully received.

ah, there are plenty of olive growers in WA. It is hot in summer (no sea breeze) and not much else to do than growing olives, keep a few sheeps and chatting to the few village people and the odd tourist.

If it was york ,yorkshire that would be a differnt story . But york ,west australia is well ermmmm very hot and very very very quiet .

Surely it depends on the person, and what they want out of life. Lots of people live on the land in remote areas and wouldn't do anything else. York is not that remote, you can get to Perth in less than 2 hours if you want a city fix.

I agree with above about it being dependant on what the person wants out of life.

I live nearly 5 hours out of Perth and love it. We are not planning on moving to Perth ever. Ive also got kids aged 17 to toddler who also like it.

But most on here prob think Im crazy because I like living rural. We knew we prefer rural life before we came.

Its not for everyone but my town has lots of European expats who like it. Although my town gets a roasting on here whenever some poor sod comes on and dares to mention it.

Rural WA is very different to rural UK, but you can make it your home and like it. We are planning on buying rural land in the future and staying rural.

Very few on here ever live rural so can not really say what its actually like living long term in rural Aus. Living in a rural town is completely different to passing through or reading the odd forum post.

i agree ,rural australia is so different .i couldnt do it personally i find the cities dull enough but i can see the attraction for those that like that lifestyle .

I thought York was lovely. Very old English villagey, definitely out of town but really only an hour so not totally cut off from civilisation. I can imagine the flied being a big problem in the summer but we have had some lovely pub lunches in front of a roaring fire in the winter and felt very much 'at home' there.

Hi there

We visited York a couple of years ago, nice town but not enough there for me!

It does get very hot there - the day we stayed there it was around 44 and the lady at the pub said the previous week it had got up to 52!
