Default worth taking electrical goods?

is it worth taking your electrical goods with you when you emigrate?

does anyone know how much it costs on average to have them modified for use out there?

or is it just simpler to buy everything when you get out there!

cheers...

Assuming you mean from the UK to Australia:

The following will likely have issues:
- TVs
- VCRs
- Landline Phones (especially cordless)
- Fridges
- Cookers (may not fit into a new property, or be gas when electric is needed or vice versa. Rental properties usually have cooker provided).

The following can usually be taken:
- DVD player (if multi-region)
- PC, including monitor.
- Small electrical goods (kettles, radios, lamps etc)
- Mobile phone (needs to work on the GSM900 band and be 'unlocked' to work on a network other than the one you bought it to use on)

Washing machines - it depends. A good quality machine is worth bringing, as long as you accept the risk it may be damaged in shipment.

Plugs are not a problem. You can buy a plug adaptor for a few dollars. It's useful to bring UK socket boards as long as you don't overload them.

Hi Dingdong

Take the lot there's loads of threads on tv's etc. Fridges are dodgy something to do with CFC's. If you have an older fridge you may have to leave it here. Customs in Oz have a web site, check it out.

Newcastle? Where bouts?

Hi
The voltage in Aus is the same as here. Just use an adapter on the UK 3 pin plug.

There have been many threads regarding the conversion of TVs for use out there. They can be modified but most people that take the TV from the Uk buy a VHS out there and use that to tune the TV. Seems to work ok.
If you search for "TV" in the forum you'll see all the technical reasons why the TV from the UK dosen't work. The Aussies use a different PAL system.

Any power tools, kitchen equipment, amps etc., so long as they're 240v will work fine.

Such a small world! no leaving do for us - far too hard!

Sitting with Honeybob and she believes she's probably encountered you at some point in her slack little Low Fell life. Just a joke - really. I now have a very sore ankle from where she's wellied me.

Hope you enjoy Perth, September is just around the corner man. Dont think we'll find anyway like the Toon though but then again this will probably save my life from Kidney failure.

Take Care.

A newish TV should work no problem. My 2 year old Phillips will work, you just need to find the set up menu and set the country to 'West europe' That will give you PAL B/G instead of the UK PAL I. Clear as mud.
