Default Is it worth renting furniture?

Just wondering if it is worth renting furniture when we first arrive in Perth. We have been told it will take around 10-12 weeks for our furniture to arrive from the UK. So we have 1 of 2 options;

1 - We send our furniture over early and we arrange to travel just as furniture is due.

2 - We arrive in Perth and rent furniture for the first 3 months or so until ours arrives.

Is it expensive to rent short term? Also does anyone know any companies in Perth that provide this service?

In my opinion and that is all it is, with renting things here you pay that much you are just about paying the cost of buying the items. But others may have a more in depth knowledge. We ended up buying a cheap suite to keep us going, and quite a bit of stuff lent by some very very nice people.

We are waiting for our container as we speak. It is in brisbane but still awaiting clearance, and i think that has been the hardest part so far for everyone. Until your stuff arrives you cant settle. So it might be better to have it shipped early, but dont expect it to turn up on time. we are only 4 weeks overdue so far.

But which ever you do you lose at one end if you see what i mean. Im sure it would be just as hard trying to live in Uk when all the gear has gone. But again someone with experience doing it that way can help more.

I thought a good way would be to share two containers with some one who is coming across at the same time. Each fill half the container and have one sent early and one when you are leaving. that way you can have a lot of your gear here when you arrive.

But i guess thats just wanting your cake and eating it.

We are paying $500 for a double bed, single bed, 2 bedside tables, dining table and 4 chairs, washing machine, fridge, 3 seater sofa, coffee table, tv, tv stand, ironing board, iron, kettle and microwave.

I do not think I could buy all this for that price. This is for 4 wks then we will pay on a day by day basis until our stuff arrives. This is through castlehire in brisbane and the stuff is of good quality.

As for kitchen stuff, towels, pegs, clothes hangers we did a trip to Ikea and bought the basics and it cost $250 and we get to keep this so dont see it as a waste of money.

First time we came we did a trip for 4 months so by the time we arrived our stuff was here also a good option if you can afford it and it is the best time to do it when you have little responsibilities as you are between countries so to speak.

When you first rock up where will you be staying? Fully furnished house/apartment maybe? How long till you find somewhere to live permanently? Maybe after all this there may not be that much time left to have to rent furniture?

There are places in Perth that i have heard of that rent everything, Radio Rentals ring a bell, just google it.

Hi All,

Sometimes (if you are renting) you can get furnished and if you have an understanding land lord you can get the rent reduced when your furniture arrives.

We're planning on camping out in the rented house, blow up mattresses and sleeping bags.

The landlord has agreed to leave us a dinning room set and fridge freezer, until ours arrives.

We gave away our garden furniture set so we will have to get a new one anyway, so we wont be doubling up on that.

We may buy a sofa bed for the living room and then when our stuff arrives this could go into either; our daughters bedroom so she could use it and have friends to stay, spare bedroom or study.

Will have to buy some basic kitchen stuff too to tide us over.

But basically were camping out in a house.

Thanks all.

Hi All,

two suitcases with hold blow up mattresses, sleeping bags and a Picnic Rucksack - this can be used in the conventional way for picnics but also we'd be able to use the cutlery etc whilst our main stuff is being shipped.

We're taking laptops in hand luggage so we'll have those to keep us amused. We're going to wait until our TV arrives rather than buying another, as Australian tv is not supposed to fantastic we probably won't be missing much.

I'm sure by the time our stuff arrives we'll be desperate to sleep in a bed but at the moment we're trying to view it as an adventure.

If we had young kids you could always use your sun shelter ten (whatever they're called) and let them sleep in that at home in the house too, makes it more like camping!

Good luck

Thanks all.

Some great ideas I hadn't thought of. We're not taking much of our furniture but we were a bit worried about the expense of having to replace everything at once, as well as buying a car, restocking the pantry from scratch and buying school uniforms, books etc. I think we can buy ourselves a bit of time now.

Hi All,

There are some seconds stores for white goods, you know the sort where you can buy a discounted fridge/freezer because it has a scratch on, that we'll be using.

You can look into second hand stuff, some good bargins to be had here. This way you keep as much of your nest egg as you can until you are settled. You can always buy newer later. This especially makes sense if you're giving yourself a year or two to decide if you are definitely staying in Australia.

Thanks all.
