Just another quick note, are the lonely planet books still the best ones out there as regards for backpackers etc touring Oz?

dont bother with Lonely planet etc etc just get out there and do it! The best way to learn and find like minded travellers is to hit the road and meet them.
Do as thousands do the east coast route,start at the top(Cairns ish) and work your way down,if you are a true backpacker youll be too pissed to notice if its sunny or not anyways.
