Default Working FIFO

Does anyone on here do it? I've started my job in Perth now and I'm waiting to mobilise to site on a 3/1. I came out here on my own with a suitcase and hand luggage (I didn't ship anything) so I'm thinking of staying in a hotel on my weeks off instead of getting an apartment for the sake of 1 week every month. Does anyone else do this Or have any advice? Does anyone know of any storage in Perth area (long term) for some stuff that I wont take to site, I've looked online to no avail. Cheers :-)

I've heard of people flying to Bali, Kuala Lumpur, Phuket on their weeks off.... why not. If you have no ties, a hotel or another country would be fabulous.... I would do it.

Alternatively, buy a house and get a tenant to look after the place, help pay the mortgage, and you have a regular place to come back too each rotation, which you may prefer.

I work a 3/1 many of the single boys i work with end up working longer stints and disapear to Asia for a few weeks, I envy them they seem to be always on holiday. If i was i the same position i would do the same. In Bali they can rent out an apartment for approx $5k a year the company pays them the equivilent of flying back to perth so they basically holiday for free, flying from Port Hedland. Go for it

$5k a year for an apartment sounds very reasonable. I'll also be working from Port Hedland and I didn't realise you can fly to Bali from there....hmmm really is food for thought. Thanks very much for your reply.

I do 26/4 days. im in Mackay tho the swing is to short to do overseas trips. the single guys on 4/1 weeks sometimes go over seas i think it depends what you can do with your flights. we are only allowed to fly to point of hire even if it cheaper to go to Bali.
Watch out about buying a house near were you work that will have a effect on your LAFHA (if we still get it after july)

I'd imagine it does vary from company to company so I'd have to enquire about whether I could do anything with my flights but even if not it may still work cheaper to fly back to Perth and go on from there instead of renting somewhere. It's all a bit of a haze for me at the moment, not sure what to do. I have accommodation in Perth until mid April, after that I've sent a few enquiries off to hotels / hostels in Perth if I need somewhere but ideally I'd like to visit other places in a travel-able distance from Perth....still not sure what those places would be though haha.

If you are going to base yourself in Perth I would suggest you base yourself near cafes and bars especially being young and single.Have a look at Mount Lawley and Leederville. You could perhaps do house share.

Thanks, will take note. I went into Northbridge on Friday night as one of the only people I do know here was up for some drinks. I saw first hand that Perth is full of Irish haha. I'm not sure I'd want to base myself actually in Northbridge but somewhere not too far would be ok.

I have seen a few improvements In Northbridge over the last six months or so.We often go there for a night out but not at the weekend.A few new bars and cafes have opened there. And yes is no shortage of Irish.Good luck with your plans.I hope you get settled soon.

The company i work for give us $250 each way for flights and 4hrs traveling each leg. My brother works in Port Hedland his boss pays him the cost of a rtn flight to Perth its usually cheaper for him to fly to Bali than Perth. He and 3 others rent a new 3 bed 2 bathroom place between 4 of them as i mentioned earlier $5k a year rent between them.
