Daughter works part time at Woolies at a checkout chick and I have to say it`s been great for her confidence and character - I`d have been sacked within a week If I had to deal with some of the idiots out there who seem to get off on their little power trips.

Not YOU obviously. :D

Obviously. :)

Perhaps another reason people dont like "talking" is the rip off prices of the Woolies/Coles duopoly. Added to goods well past their sell by date.

Tell them. Read the ****ing papers - it's in there. This is what happened in the UK when the talk of the town was rip-off Britain - now quite a while back.

I'm sure they get far more complaints than compliments but we like to even it up a bit where merited.

I guess whats been proven by most peoples attitudes with this thread. That what a few people see as the positive attributes of being snooty and aloof are probably best left back in the UK.. Where this kind of 'tude is appreciated and they can try and outdo each other in the snobbish stakes.

I like it! I'm not saying we have a deep and meaningful or anything but a little friendly hello and chat. Our Coles has only fairly recently reopened after the floods (and it's been really done up and is heaps better!) so had a little chat with the checkout chick the other day about where all the employees went while the shop was shut for nearly 6 months, how they're finding it now it's reopened and all fancy etc.

It's not like it takes any time, you're already standing there while they do their thing, why not be polite?

I remember working on the till at Tesco when I was doing my A-Levels. I only worked 3 hours at a time but nearly died of boredom every shift (the thought of working there full time was certainly a very good incentive to work hard at school!). Having a pleasant friendly encounter with the person in my queue was what saved my sanity.

And fair enough if you don't fancy a chat, but at least a hello and a smile isn't too hard?!

Not that I lie awake worrying about the Woolies / Coles duopoly, but even if I did, I would not consider that to be the fault of the checkout operator. They are People, fellow human beings - do you not get that?

Good grief some people can't do anything but whinge  would you really prefer it if they grunted rudely at you?

I find their greetings pretty genuine and I always respond by asking them how they are, which then begins a conversation! Being friendly and good manners never hurt anyone :)

Don't think it is country-based - I can be aloof in any country - but it doesn't detract from, all things being equal, a tendency to try to make my day, and maybe other people's day go smoothly...

This migration lark - or BE seems to bring out the worst in some people.
I suspect it's a self-fulfilling prophecy...

I'm pretty sure that some of the conversation pieces are genuine too.
If it really was 'have a nice day' US style it might be different..but just a greeting nonetheless.
