Thanks for the list of tips to do, (already printed off ready!)
I imagine for you having done these things it all looks staight forward, but it feels like i'm trying to sort out the worlds problems there seems to be sooo many things to do here before we leave!
There are a few things that we're still unsure about
; will our tv's / mobile phones work in Oz?
Is it worth obtaining our no claims discount proof prior to leaving?
Is it worth buying a pc in the UK before travelling to Oz?
and how do you decide on an internet provider, there seems to be hundreds?
Thanks
Mark

Mobile phones, yes, but get them unblocked so that they can be used on other networks (I worked for Vodafone...) - you will need a new SIM/contract/prepay as calls on your UK SIMS will be charged at high rates.
TVs yes BUT the PAL system here uses VHF for sound so your tv may not work unless it is MULTI system. If it's a good tv bring it and buy a digital receiver here or a cheap Aussie video recorder and use that as the tuner. I bought a 43 inch when I got here as the rooms are so much bigger...
Insurance NCBs, yet BUT most insurers will trust your word until you have a claim and if you have misrepresented you will find yourself uninsured. Safer to get the NCB statement just in case. I didn't have to prove mine. I also got mine here but I had to wait a few weeks. If you need a car then either get it before you leave or hire a car for a few weeks. I hired via Nova on the web and it was cheaper and when I extended for another week it got cheaper again...
PCs work here whether from UK or Australia. I bought another one here when I arrived (better spec than the one I sent) for about $1500. It was cheaper to go to somewhere where they will build to spec. Don't bother with Harvey Normans or the other box shifters as they are dearer for the specs.
Try www.broadbandchoice.com.au if you want an ISP with broadband. I use Ihug and they are quite good although I only have dialup. Telco costs are local call rates 17.5c for as long as you can stay online with your ISP.
Bigpond and Optus is expensive as an ISP. Most of them are good but basic.
For dial up ISPs, someone answered this a few months back and I can't remember the site but do a search on ISP.
I hope this helps...

Thanks again Steve, Brilliant to get some definitive answers!

Trouble is we spend too much time thinking and creating problems in our minds that dont actually exist.
It is all `what ifs` and I am one of the worst for doing it.
This site is absolutely fab, however where people are so honest there are on occasions very negative postings. People `share` there thoughts whether good or bad with their `friends` on the site.
i think you just have to go with the flow......
