Well we're in the final stages of selling the house and making the big move over to Sydney.
We've been given quotes for packing all our stuff up and sending it by cargo to Australia but one thing bothers me - can we use our electrical appliances in OZ ?

I've had some people say that all we need to do is change over the plugs on items like our fridge freezer & stereo, however other people have said that we won't be able to do this. One person even suggested that if we tried doing that with our TV and even our X-box then they definately won't work !

Please does someone know the truth behind this ?

Australia use 240v 50Hz supply exactly the same as us
so all you gear will work

the TV etc are slightly different as the Aus system uses pal D
and the sound wont work
however if you buy a set top box it will
i believe these are available for about 100$

There is nothing to stop your electrical appliances working in oz they use the same 240v as we do so just changing the plugs will be fine.
but....................
your tv might turn on but might not be able to recieive any signals due to some technical thingy that has to do with the type of signals we use over here compared to what the aussies use. some newer TV's are ok but not all.

there was a thread about this very subject not to lng ago, try a search for it.
i know you can make any TV work over there by buying a aussie VCR and using that with yout telly. seeing as the aussie video player is set up to recieve oz tv it'll work no worries.
or better sell your tv and buy one in oz. there cheaper there anyways and you'll save on transport costs.

i`ve checjked a couple of sites and tried a like for like evaluation the seem to be about the same price

its not easy getting prices for goods in oz anyway seeing as everything is discounted for cash.
i asked about tv's a while back this is what ABC diamond said

thats a bit cheaper than argos i'ld say especialy with a cash discount.

I agree with everyone else, although we didn't bring the TV Another point that might interest you is that UK phones work on the same frequency as the police so you can't use them - left those behind to. Oh any important point- plugs on electrical appliances have to be changed by an electrician and tagged, if you do them yourself and there's a fire the insurance companies won't pay up. So you need to find a friendly leccy who will tag them for you.

Just like to add that my lovely LG Washing Machine from the UK which was a all singing all dancing jobbie with flashes and buttons and stuff never liked the move over to Oz. It never worked properly and it exploded within a few weeks (literally), I think it was more to do with it being moved and maybe water getting into the boards due to condesation on the move over in the container, whatever happened it gave up and I now have a front loader from Oz that isn't all singing and all dancing but does the job just as good.
