Default Why are whitegoods so expensive here?

I was checking the Good Guys and Bing Lee sites and found prices to be almost double of what I paid/will pay in Dubai.

For e.g., a Samsung double-door refrigerator, 702L costs $3,500 and a similar model (ok only 640L) in Dubai costs $1650,.......ok, not exactly like for like - but hey, shelling out an additional $ 1,750 for what appears to be very minor differences

http://www.samsung.com/au/consumer/d...=RSG5FURS1/XSA

http://www.samsung.com/ae/consumer/d...JUM&fullspec=F

Am I missing something

I think I'll just buy some really cheap stuff (and use them as back up later) to see me through a couple of months until our stuff gets shipped over...

Hoping for an impulse buyer; perhaps a kid paying with mummy's credit card?

Can get it for a lot cheaper :

http://www.appliancesonline.com.au/p...ign=myshopping

So allowing for the model difference and the extra 100L then there isn't taht much of a difference, certainly only a few hundred dollars which could be explained by GST.

And are there any taxes on consumer goods in Dubai?

What they state on their websites bears little or no relation to what you would be charged in the shop. You always haggle and depending on how much you get, you should always get a fair discount.

because savvy people check the price online print it out and get them to match it or very near it

of course few new comers always get caught when they offer to knock just $100 off the price

Whitegoods might be cheaper in Dubai but it's a shithole so these things even themselves out.

Honestly, RRP's or manufacture rec prices don't mean a sh*t here. Best way is to head into the store and ask for a good price. E.g. I got a TV RRP of $1900 for $1500. BTW this is not when the economy is cr*p..This was 2 years ago.

Same story is with whitegoods.

No taxes on consumer goods... Thanks for that link. Very useful to get a ballpark figure and see how far I can bargain the price down or even buy online (would you recommend buying online?)

This looks like the closest UK equivalent. Look at the difference in price!

This issue with whitegoods like that in the UK isn't the price, it's the fact that the houses are so cramped and tiny, very few people have the space in their kitchen for a side-by-side.

That's a fair comment. The kitchens are tiny over here.

I've just been looking at some of the property websites and see that many kitchens in Aus seem to be designed with a double door fridge in mind. Hmmm... It could be worth bringing a double door with us

The UK one for £579.90 Was £739.99 Samsung RSA1WTMH
Capacity: Net Total 539 Net Freezer: 193 Net Refrigerator: 346

An Australian one for $1,675 Samsung SRS542HP (RRP $2,077)
Capacity: Net Total 540 Net Freezer: 222 Net Refrigerator: 318

Using the exchange rate in Dec 2002, these would be the same price

True enough, but we have to make the current weak pound work for us somehow
