It has always happened and always will.
Ealrs Court = Aussies
Southall = Asians
Golders Green = Jewish
Kilburn = Irish

And they are only tiny parts of London .

The BE community in Melbourne seems to be quite spread out

We all seem to be enjoying various aspects of the same new culture but also enjoy catching up as its a "shared journey". Many people on here have also left close family etc behind and perhaps need a sense of community bonding to get them through the early days. There are also some of us who see others suffering and feel a need to help out.

Agree with the poster about "not another spain" but have luckily not seen much evidence of that.

Enjoy your Sunday people

Look not for the mosque look for the curry house

I know everyone's situation is different but I had the same view when I came over, I couldn't wait to make some Ozzie friends. In reality they don't want to be friends with you!! Not cos they don't like you, its just that they have all their own friends and family here so it takes a long time to build up a good friendship.

The Brits on the other hand are in the same situation as you and are also desperate for friends! We have been here 7 months and the only Ozzies we are really friendly with are ones that have moved from Victoria and Perth as they also have no friends and family.

Making Ozzie friends will happen over a long time but you still need to have your British friends over here - I personally couldn't do without mine!!

I'm not sure everyone necessarily "wants" to live in mini British ghettos. They just end up that way, for example they go to places where they can afford to live,

When Poms come to Perth most can't afford Applecross or South Perth, they go to places they can afford like Joondalup. These burbs also tick the right boxes - big houses, near the beach, affordable (well, not these days) hence they become dominated by Brits. I don't think it's a concious decision to live amongst Brits.

It doesn't mean that your new life or adopted country aren't fantastic - its just nice to be friends with a few fellow countryman as well.

It's no different from Aussies living in Earl's Court.
Very true, I think anyone who finds the need to escape everything British should maybe look at themselves and their own issues first, how long after arriving here will they want to escape everything australian?

Also very true. I've often wondered about the posters who flame anyone who posts anything nice about Britain or critical of Australia.

you have made a very good point when you say do brits integrate well in Australia, if for example you look at perth you may well see there are lots of brits all socialising together i consider that the " comfort zone" and they are unwilling to accept charge easy, as you rightly say its the change of culture and that comes with different people and some very nice ones at that.

Agree with this. Have to admit, I wouldn't like to live in a British 'getto' because they tend to have the negative parts of British culture.

We lived in Germany for 3 years and fell into an English community without trying but we also had German friends.

We have just returned from our second trip to OZ and met a lot of brits on our day-to-day business. Some lifers, others new to the country. You can't help it over there! Whats wrong with meeting/socialising with your own kind? There's nothing wrong with being a Brit. There's no visa requirement that you should keep away from your own race. You should be proud to be a Brit!! Other communities in OZ have their areas too.

If you really want to get away from the international British community go to China! (or the moon).
If your not comfortable with your identity abroad then dont go abroad because it will follow you wherever you go.
