Why do employers not give you the time of day??
We are in the final stages of our visa application, just the dreaded meds to go!!
Despite numerous job applications and sending off my CV on spec....various chases asking for advice an whether my application has been received....the grand total of replies....ONE! Ive over 4 years experience here with a good CV and track record but not one employer will even say "thanks but no thanks! or sorry not interested" they prefer just to ignore me?? Oh wait maybe its me!
Ive a reasonably well paid job over here around 30k, and carnt afford to go out to Australia without a job to go to?? Anybody got any ideas...do I need to wait for the visa to be granted first??

me too!! I was rather hoping it wasnt just me!! Over here ive got every job ive ever applied for!! trying to get even an acknowledgement over there is a waste of time.....the only reply I got was 3 months after sending in my application...saying "can you send the application again as we didnt receive it"
then the complete ignore!! despite chasing it up..nothing!!
Its too big a risk to jack everything in here....and go there on a wing and a prayer hoping you can get a job?? Has anyone left a good job on the UK and regretted moving to Oz without a job offer??

Also, and I hate to say this, but unless you are in a specialised field in demand (nursing, education etc) I think its equally hard to get a job offer. Afterall, an employer has the choice between applicants. Do they a) take the Australian applicant in front of them who lives nearby and can work as of next week OR b) offer the job to the pom who hasnt even migrated yet and will have to keep it open until they do and worry about the fact that they would even want to live in the area etc.
Devils advocate stuff you understand, but if you were an employer what would you do ? I only say this because you shouldnt get disheartened but do be realistic. Gluck!

I think you'll find thats exactly what most people did on this site, ie move without a job offer on the table. This is usually the reason that people are so stressed and worried about the move.

I blame HR, well I blame HR generally for most things in our place.
HR should be doing their job and if a good CV comes through they should make contact and explain that they can only make offers to PR visa holders, but that you should recontact when you do as they are interested.
I do have a lot of specialist experience which you *cannot* get anywhere but a handful of places in the world, and if a place passes my CV by without contact then perhaps they won't be getting a crack when I have my PR.
This is what HR should realise, they are the face of that company and in the age of email I really do think a stock email reply would do a lot to keep a good feeling for a company. After all, the person they p**s off today might be looking to place a contact in a few months and they get s**t listed because of a poor impression.
If I ever run a business, HR will have a big turn over and you won't get very many chances before I'd kick your arse out the door (I think I would sack everyone I deal with in our company!)

Then a few months after giving up trying and losing all confidence I bump into an Australian mate in the street and tell her what's happening, She says thats terrible and will see what she can do. within a week we get a cold call offering her a job in the most shit school in the area. Noone else wanted to work there so they offered it to her.
Needles to say she took it. Despite all her experience on the job she has to start on entry just out of school wages and has to spend the next 3 months proving, re proving and sending off certificate after reference to the Dept. Ed to get her salary reviewed up to where it should be. Were told she will get it but has to go through all the bollocks and nearly 4 or 5 months on nearly minimum wage.
For me the country sucks, yes I'm generalising sorry northernbird, but you an only take so much shit before you tar the entire country.
To those comming here and needing to work soon after landing otherwise you will sink, should really think twice and only come once you have secured a job first. *Rant over*
Should add, don't expect anyone to return a call or reply to an email. It's just not done here. You need to phone to get anywere.

Re: Why do employers not give you the time of day??
Have been in Oz for 3 months and have been working for the last 6 or so weeks. I found it really difficult to get any interviews for weeks. Even though I have 7 or so years experience in IT, and applied of most IT jobs going in Adelaide. Finally I got a couple of calls back, couple of weeks after that I got a few interviews and now got a contract job for CSIRO. I have not applied for any other jobs since I have been working, yet I still am getting e-mails telling me that I have not got a position for a job I applied for over 6 weeks ago (Another HR issue me thinks).
Also as I am here only on a years working holiday visa, I do have limitations for how long I can work for a company, which I can say how employers can get turned off. Also many of the jobs it does state at the bottom that you need to have Perm Residency.
My only real advice is to keep calling, and e-mailing your CV, you will get a reply, and you will find it easier to get a job once you land here.
Good luck with the job hunting.

We found the same, most employers dont seem interested until you are here, ready and able to start work. Fair enough I suppose, they probably get inundated with requests from overseas people and how do they know they're all genuine?

When you arrive here, though, and you have shown your commitment, it should get a little easier. But of course you then have the 'No Australian experience' hurdle to overcome, so you need to be able to talk a good job to the agents too.
As Arkon says, people don't reply to Emails here - for anything - you really do have to get on the phone and badger people.
On the plus side, I landed my dream job in 3 weeks of arrival, so you don't have to have something to come to. And I suspect that a great many of the people who post on this site have had to take that giant leap of faith. Very few people come here with a job to go to...
