................your destination?
Hi all just wondering, to those who's never been to Oz or have no family there why have you chosen your destination?
We are hoping to go to Brisbane/Gold Coast but no real reason for picking the area

We have never been to oz and dont know anyone out there. We picked Brisbane as it looks really nice and the weather is always good. This is a good a reason as any

Hi, we never been to Oz and at the mo we have chose QLD because we think it is nice, now is the biggie were in QLD to live, it is about 4 x UK size we change our mind every week, if it was just me and Ryan we could just go and have a trip about and find a place that way but not so good with having two little'ns 4 and 18 month, it is Cairns this week not sure were it will be next.
We have about 9/12 month to go yet, how about you what stage you at.

Would have thought that the likelihood of getting good work, in whatever trade/profession you're in, would be the main factor. Don't want to sound like a grump, but the last time I checked - sunshine didn't pay the bills.

We picked Adelaide because:
A - There was a lot of work for my OH
B - The licencing process was easier here than any other state
C - The income - housing cost for us was a little lower than any other state
D - I have an Aunt here, although I'd only met her once when I was little so didn't know her.
F - We thought, why not, we can always move somewhere else if we don't like it.

This was my logic 4 years ago:
Perth - arse end of nowhere
Adelaide - boring!!!! Too many bloody churches
Melbourne - why would I travel 11,000 miles for a similar climate
Sydney - too expensive
Darwin - too bloody hot
Cairns - too bloody hot
Brisbane - up and coming city, good job prospects at the time, great climate, great lifestyle etc etc.
The decision - perfect, absolutley no regrets

Sydney - Great place to visit, not to live. Too expensive, busy and dirty. London with sunshine. Opportunities not great for me.
Melbourne - Great city but shit weather. Too busy and dirty No opportunities for me.
Adelaide - Never been, never want to go. Shit wages.
Brisbane/SE Qld - Shithole. Way overrated, overdeveloped and too many bogans. Too humid. There would be good opp's for me there.
Perth - Best place in Australia. Booming economy means loads of work for me. Great weather and environment. Has the best combination of income/lifestyle available to me on this planet. Love it.
All other places hold no interest for me to live there.

Melbourne
BECAUSE of the weather
A truely impressive city - not too busy, cosmopolitan, great arts scene, eclectic range of suburbs
Beautiful bay beaches - and ocean beaches within reasonable driving distance
Great job opportunities for OH
Skiing in the winter within a couple of hours drive
The variety of scenery within Victoria
Ease of travel to other parts of Australia & NZ
House prices still affordable in outer burbs - and our wonderful village areas
BTW - If people really believe Melbourne's weather is shit or like the UK, then you deserve not to discover the best area in Australia

Only ever considered Melbourne and surrounding areas because of work for husband in print and we loved the weather!
My job then offered an all expenses paid transfer to Sydney and we jumped at it even though we had only spent 10 hours there before waiting for a train to Melbourne and most of that in a Pub! Though we did fly into Sydney on a seaplane that followed the coast down from Newcastle and obviously thought the harbour was terrific.
We moved two months later and have been here nearly six years. In terms of a place to live if you get the suburb right for your needs it is fantastic. Also in terms of employment opportunities for me I would never of considered any of the more "backward" cites
Cheers

Ours is probably the most fickle reason for choosing somewhere but it was the right decision for us. We were watching Location Location Location and they were in Aus. When they got to Perth the presenter said 'Perth is the most isolated city in the world with a very hot climate', that was it for us, sounded like paradise so off we popped. We will be here a year in a couple of weeks and have no regrets. The way we looked at it was that we could always move again if we didn't like it.

Ryan is a Joiner/Builder and there is lots of work in QLD, well there is lots of work in NSW and VIC lots of places really and he had offers even at this stage but we like QLD, The question asked was why choose the place, we wouldn't move were there wasn't any work and people would struggle to pass the point system if your trade wasn't required, Schools are another thing, we will travel around a bit to find the best place for us but there is only so much we can do Oz is a big big place.
