who is in or heading for melbourne?

hello
last night we recieved an email from the company who are offering JC a job.
At the interview he was asked if he wanted to be based in Sydney or Melbourne, he choose Sydney, but hen last night the email said he had been offered a position in Melbourne.
This is a shock to us as orignally we wanted to go to Perth as my family are there, but we didnt mind living in Sydney for a couple of years, till then, but now this has thrown all our plans and research out of the window as we had never even considered going to Melbourne, and had started to look forward to going to Sydney......
My sister is in Melbourne at the moment and is due to leave for Sydney in December, she often says in her emails to me that its cold in Melbourne and houses are expensive......
Can anyone tell me anything about Melbourne that will get me excited about moving there?? We are a young couple with a dog and no children, will we enjoy melbourne???
I also need sunlight, as i suffer with SAD very badly in the winter months here and I was hoping that by going to Aus I wouldnt have to put up with SAD anymore. Does Melbourne have bad winters with cold dark nights like here??
Any info would be kindly appreciated..
thanks guys

Hi Laura,
If you love shopping, culture, eating out, live music, beautiful parks, good markets and easy travelling distance to a diverse amount of countryside...Melbourne will be the place for you.
I adore Melbourne. I love the fact that Melbourne has the 4 seasons, but dont find it nearly as cold for as long as the UK. Yes, it does get cold but you will find it doesnt feel so bad because its for half the time as the UK. The summers are hot...but not humid like up north.
Like all city's, it has its not so nice areas, but you will learn the areas you like to go and wont even notice them....
I would recommend Melbourne...definatly

will i be ok with the dog, finding a place to rent and are there good places to take her for walks?
Also in the winter do the clocks go back, and what time will it get dark? Do the houses in Melbourne have central heating or do you just have to sit by the fire and brave thro the winter months? (i am a pussy in the cold, will have to take my hot water bottle) ha,ha!

~LOL~ I understand totally about the cold thing!!!
Definatly most of the newer houses have central heating. Its not like in the UK though, its generally ducted. Or the gas wall heaters can be pretty good too.
Yeah, the clocks go back in the Winter and to be honest, I dont really remember what time it goes dark. Its been a few years since I have been in Melbourne in the winter. Probably about the 5pm mark from memory.
It will depend where in Melbourne you live, but I am sure you will find loads of places to take the dog for a walk.
I still say you should love it here. It is a good place for just about anyone....In my opinion....a biased one it might be tho

I gotta agree with Hels even though I'm biased as well. Been in Melbourne 5 years now & loving it.
Wife is a nurse & much prefers it here to the NHS back home.

i know i am making a big deal about the cold, but i had not ever considered aus to be cold as had never looked into melbourne, and didnt reliese the difference in temp. Although ido like the idea of going snowboarding on those snowy mountains, as long as there is a nice coal fire to thaw out by

hey boardy,
didnt reliese you were in melbourne, im feeling better already cos i'll know lots of people there soon.
What nursing does your wife do?
I am taking a break from my nurse training and hoping to take it back up again once i get citizanship in aus, until then i fancy working with learning disabled people, maybe in a special needs school or day centre, do they have many places like that in melbourne?
As i will need to run a search on them before hand. (i thought i had already done this as done it all for sydney thinking i was going there) i need some names of places like autistic society or down sydrome etc.....they are hand to find in aus....

I stay indoors, in the Winter!!! ~L~ Or go to Qld for a holiday hehe...
Actually, I dont fnd it nearly as cold in Melbourne as it was in London. Its only hard to deal with when its wet and windy. And that isnt really that much out of the whole year.
Its only 2hrs up to the snow, so its pretty handy from Melbourne.
We arent actually in Melbourne. We are in a city called Bendigo which is about 1 1/2 hrs from Melbourne.
But we will be heading to Melbourne loads once we get on our feet financially...

i am now sure yet, we are hoping that she might of made a mistake and really mean sydney. We had everything all sorted and even had the qoutes for the dog!! And i am desperate to join scuba diving and rollerblade with you guys!
Was also looking forward to being able to surf without a wet suit, but in Melbourne I will need a wet suit as the water is cold. i wanted to have my pink surfboard and boardys on and mess around on manly beach, but never mind, as long as i get to aus, i'll have to take it from there.....
We will ring her tomorrow and ask, we still prefer sydney, but if melbournes all they have i dont mind now, its only till our PR comes through, so if we dont like it when can leave as soon as we get PR and apply for other jobs.....
I might even live a year in melbourne, a year in sydney, them holiday in brissy, then move to Perth forever LOL Then i have been everywhere

Hi Laura, tis me
I'll take you up on your offer of having our own Ramsey Street!!!
As I said in my PM, fingers crossed for you that it's Sydney (if that's what you want) but I'm crossing the other fingers and anything else that will cross without leaving me permanently damaged, that it will be Melbourne. I'm sure Milly and Montu will get on really well!!!!

If we're lucky enough to get in melbourne is where we'll be heading. We've found the people there to be realy freindly and the restaurants and service is fantastic and it's not as crowded as Sydney
