Re: Wheres the best place to head for bricklayers
Hey...I am a female...and I yes Townsville has concerts etc but some families like to have a wider choice as well and when I replied I said we like concerts as in choice of music, venues, dates etc. I am not knocking but if you have teenagers who have had the freedom of choices to a limited choice it can cause problems when settling in a new area, I have known it to happen to many families who have migrated with older teenagers, we migrated when ours were very young so that was not a problem for us.

Well Perth is cosmopolitan compared to Townsville, Perth and has way more choice than Townsville so yes Perth is different, we found Perth a bit "quiet" so I would not move to Townsville..but again thats a personal choice.

Re: Wheres the best place to head for bricklayers
We have been to all 3 and although we enjoyed visiting I would not live in any of them unless of course work depended on it, I think if we were going to live in Aus, for us it would have to be either Victoria or NSW but if work was the main importance then it would be Perth it might be small but it has more to offer in Leisure, Education, work opportunities then Townsville and maybe the edge of Canberra.

What a crock of s**t
There is more to do in Townsville then ANY other regional city under 300k in Australia (of which some of the capital cities you mentioned don't have....). It has lots of music festivals that have a catchment area as far away as Darwin and Gladstone...
Groovin the Moo, which is the largest music festival outside a capital city.
The only Full Moon festival in Australia that runs monthly that attract people and headline artists from worldwide - pretty special considering the other cities that do it, kohphangan etc - they even had Bam Margera here last weekend....
Full Noise Music Festival.
The North Queensland Cowboys (NRL)
The Townsville Crocodiles (NBL)
North Queensland Fury (A-legaue soccer)
The V8 Supercars
Select games from the AFL yearly.
Jupiters Casino
The reef
The Island's off the mainland... PLENTY TO DO.
They're also looking at bringing the Big Day Out to Townsville which would be HUGE the largest music festival in Australia.
Then you have the abundance of employment opportunities. So don't tell me there is nothing to do here...

Jon, make sure you do not wear your rose coloured spectacles.. Downunderlive is a sales event so they will talk it all up. There will be no negative messages or anything completely objective so bear that in mind...oh...and enjoy the snake oil!

They are Outback....that's why the Aussies (well my Aussie friends did) call those type of areas The Outback, I don't think its just a term about the area its also about they lifestyle and attitudes in those regional areas, they do tend to be different from City/Sub type attitudes.

When I once asked my closest friend (who is an Aussie from many generations and very widely travelled) if she wanted to go to a Rodeo (it was for New Years) in a Town which as a good drive from where we lived...she replied (with much shock and horror) "I don't do deliverance experience thank you very much" I had never seen the movie (which was what she was referring to) I do go though, it was an experience but one I would not want to repeat to often for my main social calender.

I have friends who moved from Sydney to Townsville, and they love it. The place is booming so on a great salary, good work life balance and a fabulous 4 bed house that would have cost the same as a 2 bed unit in Sydney.
Admittedly they dont have teen kids though, but I think Townsville has moved a long way from what it was a few years back

We had looked at the good house prices for townsville but have found out since that we can only get state sponsorship for either WA or NSW so its a case deciding which would suit us better on a hopefully average wage

Re: Wheres the best place to head for bricklayers
Find the job with the best sponsorship deal first, then analyse the areas available and the house prices and then make your initial decision. I say initial because once you have spent your minimum term under State sponsorship you can always relocate to better jobs/money/security/lifestyle.

I travelled through Coffs Harbour last year and the amount of big road works occurring (due Pacific highway upgrades) it looked as if there maybe a few years worth of work at minimum.
Shame about you not being able to come to QLD, just today a developer announced plans that construction is set to start on a new tower with another set to be built not long after in Townsville's CBD (so quite a significant amount of high rises planned and under construction). Shame really, your skills would be of high demand here, the growth and investment - it really is underpinning the state and federal governments commitment of making Townsville the 2nd capital of Queensland.

Have you tried Coffs Harbour? I'm not entirely sure what's involved with being a chippy (brick layer) however I do no that the State and Federal government committed funds to build dual carriageway all the way from Sydney to Gold Coast so I'm sure there is allot of work that maybe your skills could be attributed to?

Hope the Townsville Tourist Board are paying you for these posts though
