Originally posted by scutterUK i'm off to canberra..... or doesn't that count? :D I thought it was hell. Like a giant roundabout. I am sure the place was designed to confuse drivers. Then there is the womble hut of a parliament. The place was just so average and mediocre. The weather is crap and cold and the kids looked bored out of their brains. I think Milton Keynes would be a better new town to live in. |
yeah i've been there. Not for long, only for a quick holiday. My main reasons for going are friends and a job (in IT!). I agree it might not be the choice of many, but for me it holds the start of a new life.
If i decide i'm staying in aus, want to or have to move jobs i will look at other cities. Until then i'm just glad i'm landing on my feet running. Besides, it looks a damn site better than doncaster does, even if it does have crap weather! :D Originally posted by bondipom Have you ever been there? I thought it was hell. Like a giant roundabout. It will be a good networking opportunity in IT for when you want to move on. |
Middle of nowhere, NSW. Nundle, to be precise. Up on the Northern Tablelands in the foothills of the Great Dividing Range. About 500km northwest of Sydney. Nearest big town is Tamworth (Country Music Capital of Australia) 60mk away. Nundle has a population of 300, one pub, two shops and a bank on Thursday mornings. I love it.

Originally posted by bondipom Why do you love it there. Do you have an affinity to farm animals. Just joking. But why? My partner's family come from Nundle, it's where I met him and where I lived for a year. It's a rural place where people get up, work on the land and stop when it gets dark and spend the rest of the night in the pub...It's hard to describe - it just has a really good community feel. You never have to lock your door (our house didn't actually have a lock anywhere, inside or out). It's near enough to Tamworth to be able to reach the basic needs of life. Plus it's stunningly beautiful and I can spend all day out mustering. Then there's the practical stuff like the fact that a 4-bedroom house on a 3 acre plot of land costs A$124,000, there's a great school, almost zero crime, kids can play in the streets, the air is clean, the rain water is pure enough to drink and the living is good. People think I'm totally insane, but I have lived and worked there for a year, so I sort of know what I'm letting myself in for. |

I've never been a big city lad myself, i'd rather be out in the wilds somewhere. Unfortunately though, there's not much call for a web developer in the middle of nowhere... and who says the internet is global? ;) That's one thing i loved about canberra, when i had a good look around it didn't feel much bigger than doncaster, yet when you see it from above it's massive. I felt right at home there. :) |
Originally posted by bondipom If only all rural NSW was crime free. I fruit picked in Batlow in the mountains. Beautiful area but a bit chilly. A good experience but confirmed that I am definatelely a city person. Drink-driving is about the only crime. That and the, erm, 'Nimbin' lifestyle some people adopt . It's a question of preference: you're either a city person or you're not. I like to be able to visit the city, but go back to the sticks. |
