Smile Where to settle in Perth?

We are looking to move to Perth and are researching areas in and around the city. We would welcome advice on good areas to live, particularly those popular with families with young children which have good schools.

You need to narrow it down a bit mate.

Some basic info along the lines of what sort of budget are you talking about ? What kind of lifestyle do you want ? Beach ? Suburban ? Rural ? City ?

There are lots of nice areas to live but some more info would be useful to point in a useable direction.

Peppermint Grove and Dalkeith are 2 of the "best" areas but the average house price in each is about A$1.4 million. Cottesloe is a lovely place and 'bit' more affordable at A$900,000 on average. Hillarys and surrounds is popular with lots of new arrivals approx A$400 -450k. Then theres the newer 'burbs further out of the city where the prices are more around the S$200-A$300k mark but mostly they are fairly soulless and dont have a lot of facilities within walking distance.

This question has been asked on here countless times, it might be worth spending some time doing a search and then coming back with more specific questions.

Hi we've lived here since 89 originally from Shepherds Bush
It's a great place for kids but it's a bit quiet.
My advice to you would be to buy as close as possible to the coast.
The whole place is alive with poms, which can be a really good thing and a really bad thing at the same time. Infact they call an english accent here a "northern suburbs accent".
I can go on let me know if you need any more info.

Ideally looking for something not too far from the beach, we have 2 kids 6 and 2 and think that this might be the best option for us. Money wise we certainly don't have the cash for Dalkeith or Cottesloe but around the $500K is what we are aiming to spend. We would like an area that is established rather than a soulless commuter town and good schools are important to us as well. We are visiting Perth next month and want to narrow down where we want to look at for possible places to live and also see what job prospects etc are like.

If I were you with that sort of budget and 2 young kids I would look at somewhere around Mullaloo or Ocean Reef. we live in Mindarie which we chose because we can walk down to the marina where there is one of the best family pubs in perth.
At Mullaloo they are refurbishing the hotel and the beach is great for kids.
Also your'e not far from Hillarys Boat Harbour which is a great place for restaurants etc.
Somewhere near the ocean is good but just be aware of the wind!!!

Isn`t Ocean Reef a long way away from Perth City?

tbh I don`t know much about the northern suburbs. I grew up south of the river. What area`s south of the river might be within their price range and needs? Thornlie? Attadale? Booragoon?

About 24K. It takes 20 minutes on the freeway at weekends and 45 if you leave during the morning rush hour.

Thornlie is cheaper.

We're actually looking at Thornlie at the moment.. They're building a new train station at Spencer street.(Pascal works in Subi, and driving in is imo not an option! And we only want 1 car anyway)

I've seen quite a few reasonable houses around the 200000 mark in Thornlie.. now I have to ask around at work to see which streets are ok.

On the basis of that information can I suggest you consider doubleview, or wembley downs.

Close enough to the city for convenience but also close to the beach. Not ON the beach so price reflects this.($380k and $490k respectively) both areas are close to Scarborough beach road, so you have easy access to all the shops (IKEA & freedom are both there ) Both are established areas and considered "good". I prefer Doubleview but that is a personal opinion. You may not agree. Both are also relatively close to one of the best private schools in Perth if you decide to go that route for your children.

Hillarys or Sorrento could also be a good option for you.

Alternatively if you were prepared to exchange beach for city views, for just over $500k (average) you could consider Attadale (georgous) or Bicton.

Hope this helps. PM me if you need more info. Alternatively email Jopaulss form this website who has a company specialising in finding properties for people.

M

PS. I'm probably not the best person to advise cos my ideal property is up in the hills around the gooseberry hills area

Thornlie used to be considered a "bad" area but there are lots of new houses going up at the moment and its reputation is climbing (almost exponentially).

one of the guys at my work lives in Thornlie, so if you need any info Simone, let me know and I will ask him.

Attadale, attadale, attadale !!! can you tell I'm a fan ?

Alternatively Bicton or Rossmoyne. Maybe Applecross (expensive - $800k average but absolutely fabby) or salter Point -the cheaper version of Rossmoyne ($380k average) ? having said that both Rossmoyne and Salter Point have taken a bit of a hit recently in terms of house prices.

Also none of the nice Southern 'burbs are on the beach. They are all river based. The southern Beach suburbs are all affected by the kwinana industrial area.

Question Re: Where to settle in Perth?

Hi Mairi,

You seem to know a lot about house prices etc. so I need to pick your brains ...

We are hoping to fly out end April/beginning of May. My sister in law lives in Greenwood so we want to be near her, but I really would like to be able to walk to the beach. My friend is renting in Ocean Reef, and she said that either there or Mullalloo are really nice. Do you reckon we would get a nice 4x2 with a pool etc. for up to $450 in either of these suburbs ?

Thanks

Jo

Thornlie is one of those areas that have had a dodgy past, but is now being regenerated. The train station is a bonus as historically, good infrastructure means house price rises... and don't forget the Roe Highway is right on the doorstep too.
