Calling in sick to work makes me uncomfortable. No matter how
legitimate my excuse, I always get the feeling that my boss thinks
I'm lying. On one recent occasion, I had a valid reason but lied
anyway, because the truth was just too darned humiliating. I simply
mentioned that I had sustained a head injury, and I hoped I would
feel up to coming in the next day. By then, I reasoned, I could think
up a doozy to explain the bandage on the top of my head.

The accident occurred mainly because I had given in to my wife's
wishes to adopt a cute little kitty. Initially, the new acquisition
was no problem. Then one morning, I was taking my shower after
breakfast when I heard my wife, Deb, call out to me from the kitchen.
"Honey! The garbage disposal is dead again. Please come reset it."
"You know where the button is," I protested through the shower pitter-
patter and steam. "Reset it yourself!"
"But I'm scared!" she persisted. "What if it starts going and sucks
me in?"
There was a meaningful pause and then, "C'mon, it'll only take you a
second."
So out I came, dripping wet and buck naked, hoping that my silent
outraged nudity would make a statement about how I perceived her
behavior as extremely cowardly. Sighing loudly, I squatted down and
stuck my head under the sink to find the button.
It is the last action I remember performing.
It struck without warning, & without any respect to my
circumstances. No, it wasn't the hexed disposal, drawing me into its
gnashing metal teeth. It was our new kitty, who discovered the
fascinating dangling objects she spied hanging between my legs.
She had been poised around the corner and stalked me as I reached
under the sink.
And, at the precise moment when I was most vulnerable, she leapt at
the toys I unwittingly offered and snagged them with her needle-like
claws. I lost all rational thought to control orderly bodily
movements, blindly rising at a violent rate of speed, with the full
weight of a kitten hanging from my masculine region. Wild animals
are sometimes faced with a "fight or flight" syndrome. Men, in this
predicament, choose only the "flight" option. I know this from
experience. I was fleeing straight up into the air when the sink and
cabinet bluntly and
forcefully impeded my ascent. The impact knocked me out cold. When
I awoke, my wife and the paramedics stood over me. Now there are not
many things in this life worse than finding oneself lying on the
kitchen floor buck naked in front of a group of "been-here, done-
that" paramedics. Even worse, having been fully briefed by my wife,
the paramedics were all
snorting loudly as they tried to conduct their work, all the while
trying to suppress their hysterical laughter.........and not
succeeding.

Somehow I lived through it all. A few days later I finally made it
back in to the office, where colleagues tried to coax an explanation
out of me about my head injury. I kept silent, claiming it was too
painful to talk about. Which it was.
"What's the matter?"
They all asked, "Cat got your tongue?"............... If they only
knew!

made me smile and wince at the same time :scared: :scared:

Site has become fairly pathetic. How many Hiya, got it, posts can we take. Came on one morning and every post was the above variety or about something in the UK.

Even if someone does post something on OZ, someone will burst into tears and stamp their feet.

Cant see why people will bother with it at this rate.
Warning. Sweeping generalisations, assumptions and topics already discussed!

I agree that the board of late has become a less interesting place to frequent, but I also have to say that it is a lot less intimidating. This is perhaps contributing to the increased level of uninteresting and trivial posts.

The nature of the board is that it is trying to serve two distinct groups with two distinct agendas; the pending migrants wanting information on shipping, locations, jobs, schools, banks, tax etc, and the ex-pats who want to discuss ex-pat related issues with other ex-pats or to get in touch other ex-pats in similar circumstances.

The ex-pats can answer the pending migrant’s questions, but there is a limit to how many times someone will answer the same question. The topics that the ex-pats raise are more “out of the ordinary type issues – crime, bush fires, etc. These can be perceived by the pending migrants as negative. The majority of the pending migrants are decided on their migration and the last thing they want to hear is anything that may bring this decision into question.

Also worth bearing in mind the cyclical nature of the board. I reckon that after about 6 months most topics of conversation would have been exhausted. So long as there are sufficient new members coming in to take the place of those who leave, things will continue to tick along.

After all this rambling, I don’t really think I have much of a point, other than we shouldn’t expect the board to maintain a high level of interest and engagement to all the members at all times.

How can issues such as Bush fires and crime be out of the ordinary?? They are real life issues we face. Sod pending migrants who dont like hearing about them. Take Ceris house, bushfires in that area already, crime, hardly non existant is it?
If migrants cant hack real life facts they probably should not be coming to live in such a tough place. Silly me I thought it was a forum for Life In OZ?

Ok, so “out of the ordinary was not a good choice of phrase. Hence the quotes. I was trying to say that the two groups of people want to discuss different things and although there is an overlap, it is not a complete overlap and this leads to the perception of negative posting.

Agreed, one lot really want to live here and one lot really do live here, two very different things indeed

All the issues whether trivial or life changing have a place here as they are about the lives us expats are living. Personally I am bored by some of the topics and ignore them. They do need to be there for the newbies.

I used to put my nose in all over the place but some of the threads bore me because they have been repeated over and over in the short period I have been here.

Fortunately for the forum other people like these threads.

Anyway Dots what is trivial about the Sexiest Oz thread?

Nothing, Micheal Hutchence could fill up my lunch hour anytime, better than a salad roll and a dose of expats.

Where did I put me belt

I think the two of them are in cahoots to try to liven the forum up a bit

Well said Dotty. I'm begining to come round to your viewpoints more and more these days.
