Where to go with IT Skills ?
Hi All,
Been looking through this wonderful forum for the last couple hours now, only which I had looked earlier.
Just about to post our Skilled Migration Application today!
Keep reading different things about IT Jobs in Australia. Some of the posts here say it is very difficult without local experience.
Like most, it seems, we were thinking of Adelaide, Perth, Melbourne or Brisbane areas. So far Perth seems the most attractive, mainly due to the fact that there seem to be alot of companies using Oracle Financials and I have had some interest from agencies over the last year.
From the posts it seems this is overly optimistic as most ex-pats seem to be having alot of trouble finding 'well paid' IT work in Australia.
Anyone have experience of IT and Oracle Jobs in Perth ? Is it really so bad ? Have had positive interest from "Hays IT Personnel Perth" and "Rock Resourcing Group", has anyone based in Perth had experience with these agencies ?
Should we still migrate to AUS ? If so, will the entire family be cleaning dishes. washing cars to survive when I can't find any work

IT industry is five times worse than here.
Perth probably worse than anywhere else, Brisbane just as bad, Melbourne very slightly better and Sydney slightly better again.
The money is kack, really kack especially Perth, top class project managers getting about $60k (£24k) per year on contract. !!!!
Agencies are same as here bloody crooks. Especially Hays
Best get your marigolds out.

Thanks for the response.
With the agencies in Perth, I had stated an expected salary of $50k and was advised I would more likely earn $70k + with my experience! The was from "Rock Resourcing Group".
I am certainly not a top level Project Manager, so maybe I am in for a shock when it comes to salaries etc.
Are you now in Perth or about to migrate, is it 1st July this year ? I assume your job area is not in IT since you are planning to migrate.
I wish you all the best for your move, if you haven't moved yet!

Heading for Perth on 1st July, but have been before and I had no luck getting work.
Maybe your line of work is in demand, I was looking for anything from project managment down to helpdesk support. !! and it was a nightmare. Australia tends to like "jack of all trades" so if you specialise its very difficult to fit in, but on saying that if you have a skill thats run of the mill you could strike lucky.
My main problem is I am 39 and the reality is I am too old.
Have you checked for jobs available on the job sites because its usually a good indication.
take a look at http://www.movingdownunder.co.uk/files/employment.php
I have links to job agencies etc.
Good luck hope you find somthing. As for me I hate computers always have. !! so quite like the idea of doing somthing else.
The job situation for me here in the Cheshire is just as bad so I am not losing anything by going.
Oh by the way, Apex Computing were the best agency I found in Perth - director is (was) Brian Newbertt, really nice guy and he will give you a straight answer and no bull. URL on above link.

There are certainly jobs out there but as has already been said - don't expect the private sector money that you have here. Having said that there's not the huge public/private gulf that there is here and so public sector jobs are not bad when you allow for cost of living difference. Public sector jobs are however like hens teeth and you really need to get lucky - most seem to be filled internally.
Oracle (8i and 9i) is an 'in demand' skill as is Java (I'm doing my 9i dba at the moment - not as a primary skill but as a cv booster). Oracle financials seems to be particularly popular. I'd guess that you've probably already looked at careerone and the other main job sites but also have a look at the the skill matching database on the State nominated migration web site for the state of your choice, do some key word searches and you'll see the kind of positions that they're having trouble filling from the resident population.
Cheers
Perry
