when to start looking for work
#1
I am going to be going to perth in a few months, when is the best time to start applying for jobs,,I have already contacted a few employers and they have said lets us know when you arrive and we can take it from there.
Is this how australian employers prefere to deal with prospective employees,,once resident in australia.
do all jobs go through agents, or can you cut them out of the loop?
does speculative cold calling work there?

I suggest starting to look for work once you have a firm arrival date.

Wait until you arrive . As for agencies i think it may depend on line of work , but for myself (engineering) i found them pretty useless.I used the Yellow pages and telephone approach. It took a little while but i got myself job (before any of the 3 agencies i signed up to had even got me an interview!)Try anyway you can , but just stick at it and you'll get there.Good luck

Personally, I would start by doing some reasearch. I'm sure by now you know were you are headed to in Australia, so look on http://www.yellowpages.com.au/ or http://www.whitepages.com.au/wp/index.jsp and start your search from there. You can do a bit of background checking on the different types of companies you are thinking of applying to.
Once you know of your exact arrival date (Bear in mind that companies might not want to interview if you are thinking of coming over in six months time) send the companies your details and try and get them to commit to meeting with you once you arrive...set a date with them. Certainly give them a call, that wouldn't hurt either.
Personally, I found the whole recruitment process slower than the UK, so if you do your background work before coming out here, it will probably save you some time in the long run.
What sort of work are you looking for?

Its very rare unless you have a really specific skill or something for people to offer work without even meeting you. Id never recommend an employer did it.
Most of what you've asked will probably come down to the line of work you are in ?

Being in this trade, once you get here all you would have to do is take a trip along the Kwinana strip and ask for work and Im fairly sure you will come up trumps....I say this because I have a friend same trade but unfortunately sponsered through an agency to be here. He was offered loads of work when he called but they wouldnt go with it as they had to pay agency rates for him, where as I assume you are on a normal PR so you will have no problem. Cold calling companies for unadvertized positions yes it sure does work...Satistically over here they say 70% of jobs never get advertized so to have your particulars ready to go when the jobs come up you will get the calls, cos lets face it you are doing them a favour in not having to advertize and interview loads of people....They will all ask to see a CV thou so have one prepared, they ask for one no matter how meanial the job is over here. We live in Rocky, well just the other side Warnbro and so does the boilermaker mate so if you need any advice Im sure he would give you some pointers etc like where he called when you get here...

And yes I would say they dont really entertain you until you are here, but no in your line off work I would see no need for the agencies
