Hi everyone,
Can you apply for a tax file number in Australia, before you enter and validate your permanent residency visa, online on the aus. gov. tax website, or do you have to wait until you enter Australia, and then apply when you are there on the ground.
Thanks, Tazziecat

We were told by the Queensland Treasury Corp' that you have to have an address in Australia before you can apply so have not bothered to look into it further.

Has anyone followed the links on the ATO website at Application or enquiry for a tax file number - for individuals living outside Australia ?
which then goes on to say:
Do not use this application if:
* you intend to work in Australia – register online
* you are migrating permanently to Australia – register online
and following this 2nd option, it ends with:
You can apply for a tax file number (TFN) online only if you are a temporary visitor or permanent migrant currently in Australia !

Hi
If in a PR visa, you will need an Australian address and your passport number to apply for a TFN. At teh point of submitting the application online the ATO connects to DIMIA to check that you are in the country. If you are not, you cannot proceed. My wife tried to apply while in Hong Kong using our new Australian address and was denied for not being in Australia at the point of application.
