Please supply the link for gateway as they are news to me. I remember Gateway in the US and the UK until they withdrew from the UK.

IMO for the original poster I would wait until arrival in Australia and get a Dell desktop. The price difference is marginal and you would not be liable for GST on import. There won't be any warranty complications and Dell's service is OK.

Buying in HK or Singapore is for those who know what they are doing. Bringing over from the UK means missing out on technology that will have come down in price by the time you make it to Australia.

Not sure if it is common, by my employer allows me to Salary Sacrifice a laptop PC effectively paying for a PC out of gross earnings. May be worth checking with your employer if they do the same, as it save heaps.

You can also do the same at tax return time if you use your computer for work purposes.

Anyone any suggestions on a good model with international warranty?

Then maybe I'll know what to lok for when comparing prices!

Thanks,

Elaine:)
What you save in buying in HK, may not be worth it in the long run, if you have difficulties.

It also limits you to certain "expensive" brands with international warranty.

example of laptop in local mag today:
Acer 2.5 Celeron, 256mb DDR, 20Gb HDD, CDR, 14.1" TFT, 56k Modem, 10/100 LAN for $ 1,698.

PS: Cheapest 19" LCD/TFT Monitor I have found is
Samsung GH19ASAS/XSA 1280x1024 75hz Analog 500:1 Slim line Silver at $1,110 inc GST.

Couldn't be arsed reading all of the other pages, but there are some places in Sydney CBD where you can cherry pick the bits you want and they'll uild the thing for you.

I had an Intel based one priced up for about $1700. It included flat screen, wireless keyboard/mouse, printer and a shed load of storage.
To be fair I have limited requirements. I want the webcam for webcalls back home, loads of disk for digital photos and after that its just surfing/wrod processing and internet stuff, so nothing turbo needed.
If I went for the old monitor type and normal keyboard/mouse we'd be looking at around 12-1300

www.adelong.com.au will do what you are talking about. There is more choice of cheaper components in the UK.

Try www.scan.co.uk and check out the daily specials.

Are they still in Oz?

I have had a Gateway laptop some 6 years and was very happy with their support. They have withdrawn from the UK and when I asked here about Oz no-one knew if they were still there. Here in the US Gateway staff say they are NOT in Oz - but they are hopeless anyway.

If they ARE still in Oz I will be going to them for a desktop.

her is another option, buy one in the USA en route TO oZ.

Prices tend to be the same UD$ as GB£.

A posibility if you go via USA sught seeing.

You might have to watch out for the keyboard layout. US computers don't have the "£" sign on their keyboards (so much for the shoulder to shoulder!!!)

But then again why would you want a "£" sign on your keyboard if you're going to Oz? Maybe to tell everyone how cheaply you bought stuff in the UK before moving to Oz!

Bought mine in the UK (after advice in a previous thread on prices and stuff!), got a cheap deal from PC World, which included the printer, cost me £600; one advantage was that I could get it all set up over there and make sure it worked etc - figuring if I had problems, dealing with them in a familiar environment would be easier!
Then sent it by airfreight - the cost of that balanced favourably against the cost of using internet cafes and running round the streets job-hunting instead of doing it on the net. All arrived in perfect condition, up and running first day here.
So overall, I think we probably saved money by buying in the UK, plus the convenience factor of having it straight away without having to run round and find out where to buy stuff. The only thing we had to buy was the cable to connect to the phone line.
can i ask how much it cost to send air freight? we are thinking of doing the same thing with ours.

£££££ I'm using a US keyboard :)
You can set up an option so that you can switch between US & UK keyboard keystrokes, and then by pressing [shift] 3 which is the # sign, you will get the £ sign instead.
Useful if you still have bank accounts in UK, and need to communicate with the bank etc. :)

I was going to stick with my UK keyboard, but having to keep changing when using anyones elses computer, meant constant little mistakes, so it is best to change over to the US/AUS keyboard.

Here is a link to an air freight company that quotes prices on its web site mrvan.biz It should give you an idea. (I know nothing about the company)

I used the post office to send some things over, a bit expensive, but convenient.

I dismantled my computer and put all the bits in my hand luggage, then bought a new case and re-assembled it when I arrived.

Consider getting a new monitor when you get here though, they will be a bit heavy unless you have a TFT. The UK On-Site warranty will not be valid here either :D

I thank you for that.

II don't normally read all the way through to the bottom and then go back to make replies. However, now that I know better I will have to begin doing just that.

I have a US keyboard but changed the layout style to the UK layout and memorised UK key postions like @ etc.

I think I may know what you're referring to above regarding the option above, but I can only make it work in Word and not excel. If you can do it in both please could you enlighten me.

Cheers Majj
