Never seen that mentioned in job adverts before, what type of jobs are you applying for?

As Rabc said, overtime, shift, working on weekends/public holidays or miscellaneous incidentals etc. You can't "apply" for them, as they are part of the State or Federal Award which your occupation comes under, or is written into your contract (if occupation is not covered by either Industrial Award).

For simplicity:
Penalty Rates of Pay <>= Overtime Rates of pay and such other extra payments.

I know penalties sound negative - but in reality they are positive things - such as shift allowances and extra weekend rates etc. Get used to it the Aussies are culturally different to the UK.
