Default What's wrong with this country?

I moved to Australia 7 months ago from Hungary. At the beginning I was pretty happy with my decision, but recently I am getting more worried about things what are happening here. Maybe I lived in dreamworld and I just was too naive, but I am shocked almost every time when I read the news, because of the intensity of violence against women.
Almost every single day I hear that an innocent women was raped or even worse gang-raped somewhere in the city (Sydney).
I know it is "normal" everywhere, but I find it way too frequent here.

I think it's way too disgusting that a bunch of men find it totally acceptable to rape someone on the street for a couple of minutes and ruin someone's life.

Am I missing something here?

Cold comfort i know for the victims, but reading through a few of those articles the legal system has to be applauded for giving decent (long) sentances to filth that commited the crimes.

l would'nt want to live in Sydney , especially the western suburbs, thats where it seems most of the violent crime in happens, there seems to be much less violent crime in Melbourne , Perth ,Adelaide , many rural areas and small towns theres hardly any crime at all.

yes there is crime in every country, and if you came here to Oz thinking you would escape the crime then you will be very dissapointed. Oz has a higher crime rate than the UK and since i have been here there seems to be alot of rape, muggings, murder. Nowhere is safe.

It's not even as bad as it sounds in Sydney.

Of the seven SMH news items listed, only three refer to rapes in Sydney (in 2002, 2003 and 2005). The other four news items refer to rapes that occurred in Melbourne, Queensland and Darwin (two items).

There have been two very heavily-reported, awful cases of gang rape in Sydney in recent years. One occured in 2000 and the other in 2002. They both generated (and still do, years later) many hours of discussion plus reams of newsprint. One of the news items listed refers to the sentencing of the people involved in one of them.

Hopefully the severe sentences meted out to the perpetrators will stop most people thinking it would be a smart idea to try it.

Obviously they weren't not talking about the Judge that we have in Qld, that on Monday gave a teacher who had a relationship with a 14 yo pupil, a suspended sentence- good behaviour bond and let him go free, or the rapist brothers in Sydney that had their sentences reduced because on appeal it was decided that they were too long( or maybe because they were Lebanese)?

Lightbulb Re: What's wrong with this country?

They are certainly articles "from this week only", but as nickyc has pointed out, most of them refer to crimes committed nearly a year ago, and older.
  • Two of them refer to the same incident (here and here)

  • Two of them refer to crimes committed last year (here and here)

  • One of them describes a crime committed three years ago (here)

  • One of them refers to a crime committed four years ago (here)

Only one of them refers to a crime committed this year (here) which is notable for being the first of its kind for the local community ("The residents were sickened. This has been a community for 46 years and nothing like this ever happened before").

So that's seven articles from the same week, describing various crimes committed over a five year period. And let's face it - five years' worth of crimes will tend to look bad when you put them all together.

If it was seven articles describing seven crimes committed over the same week, I'd really be worried.

I'm not defending Australia's crime rate; it's definitely a significant problem. But let's keep it in perspective.

So in answer to your question ("What's wrong with this country") I can only say "It has bad people in it; just like everywhere else."

I wont mention the mass murders in tasmania/Queensland/Adelaide over the past 10 years in Australia then.

Im based in sydney, touch wood havent had any problems, havent seen any fights or trouble so far, not that there arent. Certain cultures over here (esp in sydney) are talked about as being aggressive & trouble makers. There are places to stay away from, but most of the city centre seems ok. Apart from George st turns into a drag race track on a sat night (police need to crush their cars).

One thing that is off putting is the presence of security guards outside synagogues. They are there 24/7 & on sabbath they are at the end of each street in the area. What are they expecting? I thought we lived in a free democratic country?

Australia is not the middle east yet Im finding more & more issues that happen there determine what I see on the streets here.

We used to question the amount of crime etc but then you must realise the size of the country. Qld for example the size of many european countries put together. Although it seems a lot, the amount seems to be small compared to the size!! Not that this helps tho!

surely it is the size of the population that you sould be looking at - not the size of the country! It is not the land mass that commits crime but the people.

South Africa has an average of 32,000 murders per year compare this to 250 murders per year in OZ . The murder rate in the USA is 4 times higher then OZ. Rapes happen in every country OZ is no worse.
